      I shared a version of this guide earlier this year, but felt a website was needed to unpack the different options fully. So after an unreasonable number of hours, I put together the necessary data and website.

      I hope this is digestible enough for the average person to help those looking to take that first step, or for people who are equally passionate and want to get their friends or family involved.

      Linux and gaming. Tried pop os and none of my games was really working. Also my mouse and keyboard were not supported :/ .. sadly not an option yet

      Why would you move from one of 3 US browsers to another US browser (Firefox), same question for a few others in the list.

      For Linux, I would add OpenSuse Tumbleweed. Also I like the idea behind Zen Browser but I heard it has quite a lot of hiccups, not there yet. At least for Windows

      This is a good guide, the website is a very nice addition. I have multiple questions, suggestions and criticism, but I will also say that I take my hat off to you for actually doing it and committing the time.

      What is with they Grey stuff and why is for example vivaldi Grey?

      There are a few questionable alternatives in the list, but at this point the only US based tech I still use are Firefox, Signal, and DuckDuckGo.

      Yet still no alternative for the full Microsift stack. Someone should really pour money into developing a true competitor.

      I find that pretending that it is a matter of weeks is disingenuous. Some migrations are super long projects. Like immich. You just don’t install the app and go. You need to know how to run this stuff safely so you don’t lose your data. Same for file storage. You might need a NAS, delve into self hosting, understand trade offs, etc…

      On another note Deezer might be originally French but it is not french owners anymore, I believe they’re from the Americas now.

      I’m already mostly there, the biggest hurdles are mobile OS like Android and iOS, web videos (the creators I follow are mostly exclusively on YouTube) and Steam. I have games on gog.com (would be a nice addition to this list btw) but still a huge library that I’ll never get off there except buying all the games elsewhere if they are available at all

      You should post this on Lemmy instead of Reddit. Reddit is American.

      I support using European alternatives but.. aside from Spotify, the difference in quality between the main products and European alternatives is genuinely insulting to even suggest it. Comically enough most viable alternatives are also American (Firefox, DuckDuckGo, Signal).

      There needs to be discussion about domination of Visa and MasterCard in financial systems. Domination of American big tech in the cloud sphere. And their monopoly in software ecosystem. It’s not just about a random browser or something tbh, there are far more critical areas where this needs to start.

      I support European alternatives but many of these are just laughable. Plus, don’t assume because they’re European they’re nice. Cutthroat businesses are not exactly endemic to north America, and we have loooots of examples here

      Out of curiosity what didn’t you put brave as an alternative to Chrome, Safari, ect
      For os couldn’t you put arch Linux too

      Edit: saw you actually did put brave but you also put opera which to my knowledge (could be wrong) they have a bad privacy record now that they are owned by a Chinese company (since 2016)

      When it comes to online drive and photo/video hosting I would like to suggest a self hosted alternative, as well.

      NAS devices became very accessible in the last few years. With around €200 you can buy one and install apps like Immich as a replacement for Google Photos and choose one of the many Google Drive/Dropbox alternatives that run on NAS devices.

      I did this a few months ago and I couldn’t be happier.

      Operating system…? Ubuntu? First off all it’s a British company (Canonical) not EU and why prefer a company that needs to get revenue over a distro that’s completely maintained by the public and not backed by some million dollar company

      Always see ProtonMail as an option because they have a good marketing service, but you can also add Infomaniak mail as a viable alternative.

      I think as a replacement for drive a very worthy mention is MEGA.

      Ecosia has a browser these days but it’s chromium based, so not sure if it counts

      It’s weird to see Pop OS recommended for gaming, when Bazzite is the most trendy gaming linux distro right now.

      Week 5: I could recommend Audioteka, which is a Polish company afaik.

      Actually our friends from Germany are blocking signups with Eastern European IPs. I am all for “European” tech, but this is funny.

      My only problem with Signal is that it requires you to have people’s phone number, and I really really hate having to have people’s phone number in order to text them. The big benefit of Messenger is that I can text people without having their phone number.

      Europe needs more builders. You should use European products because they are the best in their category not purely because of ideological reasons. You need more builders and entrepreneurs for that

      People can’t fully comply with this boycott list, some services like Whatsapp, Google Suite and Microsoft suite are crucial for everything we do.

      And i use proton, firefox etc…

      To replace Microsoft Office, I would also advise Collabora Office, based in UK, or ONLYOFFICE, based in Latvia.

      To replace Windows for gaming, I would advise a more popular option, Bazzite, which is a pure community effort (no company).

      The social media part is VERY dependent on how many people agree to change it. I mean, I have all my contacts on Messenger and Instagram, and I don’t know if it’s possible to convince my friends and family to switch. And if they don’t switch, why should I?

      Just a note, because something is an EU product, that doesn’t make it ethical.

      Just to add to this, Proton Drive has a capability that can replace Google Photos, that works in a very similar way. Also, Proton recently released Proton Sheets, which in addition to Proton Docs, replaces 2 of the 3 core M365 solutions.
