      From the linked article:

*”The ship entered Bulgaria’s territorial waters on Friday under tow by a Turkish vessel, but the mission was abruptly abandoned, leaving the tanker to drift across the sea without power like a ghost ship before stranding less than a nautical mile off the shore.”*

towed by turkey. Turkey gave up their tow efforts and let ship drift. The Black Sea Gyre flows counter clockwise. That means the ship was towed from krasnodar krai by the moscovians or the ship sailed after damage because the moscovians were going to blow it up anyway. The usual moscovian method, do what we say or we blow you up.

Once in the black sea and trying to get to the Straits it must have failed and turks took over towing. But the current might have been too strong and the seas too rough, that Turkey just said screw it and see where the ship goes. Knowing it would head towards Romania or Bulgaria. The most likely landfall, would be Bulgaria since that is where most stricken ships land.

A major rule of sea towing, if you think a ship is going to sink, you DO NOT WANT to be attached to it. You let that ship sink and you go in after the survivors.(maybe)

Ran aground off Bulgaria. Bulgaria and Turkey are neighbors.
