Don’t expect better prices, nor better service, just more of the same! Supermarkets are run as a cartel in Malta, there is no competition. In nearby Sicily, where fuel is not subsidized and cost of living is more expensive, prices at both Lidl and Euro Spin are far far cheaper than the Maltese equivalent. Even in Germany, groceries from Lidl are far cheaper than in Malta. No wonder they’re falling over themselves to open new outlets, with goverment giving them free land and subsidizing their operation with tax incentives and what-not, and prices 30% to 50% higher than their other European outlets. Malta is exploding with foriegn workers, all of whom have no choice but to shop from these supermarkets, as do budget tourists and the Maltese themselves. Both Lidl and Eurospin subsidiaries in Malta are owned by large Maltese corporations, such as Hili and DBgroup and they run them according to Maltes mafia standards.
