“Band members Pascal Robinson-Foster and Wade Laurence George allege that an RTÉ report on the performance stated that the lead singer of band led “anti-Semitic chants”.
They say the reporting is categorically untrue, and are now seeking damages to compensate for injury to their reputation they say arises from the reporting.”
It would be helpful for RTE staff to better understand the distinction between antisemitism and anti Israeli military.
Globally, there’s a narrative suggesting that opposing Israel or the IDF means you hate all Jewish people which isn’t the case generally.
I’ve never seen RTE claim they were antisemitic, they’re usually extremely careful with their wording on this topic. If they use that word they’ll always attribute the claim to a person or group, but they wouldn’t make that claim themselves. Does anyone know if it was an article or live broadcast? Open to be proven wrong if anyone can show RTE calling them antisemitic. This is a bit bizarre to me to be honest, RTE would be among the last news-sources I’d assume they’d go after.
Except from the controversy they got themselves involved with, they’d probably still be virtually unknown.
I think it’s absurd to talk about injury to their reputation caused by this. The reporting around them leading this chant shot them to greater success, even if we agree that the reporting was false.
Their last Dublin show before this happened was in Whelans a 450 person venue & their first Dublin show after this happened was in Vicar Street a 1,500 person venue.
Good.
Tommy Mescal’s reports were always at pains to say alleged anti-Semitic chants so this could well backfire for the band.
I always watch the Six-One over dinner so I actually have a frame of reference for this one whereas the article or the people chiding RTE don’t even bother to identify what the alleged report is.
I fully back the lads against claims they were being antisemitic but this reeks of ‘we know we won’t win a case against the BBC so we’ll just sue someone else instead’
Dead right. There was absolutely nothing anti-semitic about the chants and publications should have been extremely careful about using those words.
Hope they take them to the cleaners all ends up.
Petty rubbish. A SLAPP suit if ever i saw one.
The money that would have been wasted on going to the Eurovision might cover this.
Seems causing controversy than actually making good music is the thing these days.
Glad to hear it, RTE is a national embarrassment that needed bailout money to stay afloat, have the lowest trust rating they’ve ever had from the Irish public, and routinely acts in the interest of FFG. The fact that they’d call the chants antisemitic is abhorrent, and we all know it’s due to how they’re in the pocket of the government, who they themselves are in the pocket of Israel/USA.
