Has that Reform MP returned the COVID loans he took out for his dormant company, or are they still unpaid? Perhaps his MP salary should be used to repay it.

People are unwilling admit it, but this was always going to be the inevitable result of rapidly setting up a bunch of schemes to funnel billions of taxpayers cash to businesses and individuals to keep them afloat through the pandemic.
Sure, we should recover all we can, vigorously prosecute those we can prove defrauded the taxpayer, and learn lessons to inform how to do it better next time, but pretending that this was completely avoidable is frankly delusional.

Don’t worry, they’re going to recover the money from the disabled

There’s a lot to say that this is unrecoverable but I would argue that this isn’t what matters. It’s the principal, it shouldn’t be about the money. The majority of people who abused that system did so knowing full well what they were doing. The only way people are going to take any government seriously is there are actually consequences to actions. Name and shame them like a CCJ or bankruptcy.

“Losses were estimated at £10bn from over-ordering and £324m of fraud.”
Why are the BBC calling this fraud when it was largely incompetence on part of the government and state?
The £10bn is fraud AND error. The error is the bigger story.

I’m looking forward to the daily hate/telegraph etc saying why this is the fault of Rachel Reeves.

So the wealthy getaway with it, but if the DWP overpay by a fiver, then they will hunt you down across space and time.

Because of the circumstances some fraud and inefficiency were certain; but the government at the time’s first thought was how can we fleece the country, not how can we stop covid. The cabinet members actively collided with 3rd parties to redirect funds into things they knew were fraudulent. The problem is so many powerful people were involved that it’s not currently possible to try to recover the money.

Is it “beyond recovery?”
Surely theres some bank statements that show deposits in to accounts?
Sounds more like, “our donors and owners wouldnt like it if we prosecuted them for fraud and took their money, so we will let them off the hook for their theft and keep blaming poors for taking a couple quid every week.”

How is it beyond recovery? There must be a paper trail for each payment.

Outrageous. Nothing is beyond recovery, they know the accounts and the names of the people they debited with those loans. Even if it takes decades they should continue.

It’s simply jaw dropping that no proper checks and balances were put in place, Yey it is equally sad that we are such a feckless society that produces people who exploited the system.

Beyond recovery maybe, but beyond prosecution? I hope not.

i know a fair few people who own businesses who “furloughed” staff to get money off the government while those same people still worked for them and were just paid cash in hand instead.

Typical media misleading the general public.
What’s the average and typical %fraud in the current government spending?
If £11bn is less than 10% of total spend for Covid, but something for argument sake 15-20% of spend on something else are fraud, then the 15-20% should be investigated and recovered and more importantly prevented as a higher priority.
£11bn sounds huge on its own but actually not much on the grand schematic of things. The UK government spend over £1.2 Trillion, which is >£1200bn a year in total. We need to know among the total spend, what the biggest fraud is, and has that been dealt with.
