Would love to know what previous iteration of Irish society was the “great” they’d like to get back to.

I have siblings and cousins living all around the world, I would hope they are treated well as we should for does who come here.

And when exactly were the good old days we should go back to? When the British were in charge? When the church was in charge? The Troubles? I’m not sure the Celtic Tiger era with its globalism, modernity and liberalisation was the right-wing ideal so if we weren’t great then, when were we?

Saw an Irish flag with that “make Ireland great again” on one of those tourist stalls for sale on O’Connell Street couple weeks back.
All I could do is roll my eyes into my brain.

    Like, why?

I saw one of their made in china Irish flags beside a drain this morning after all the wind last night. No doubt the council which they hate so much will dispose of that waste for them.

  6. If only we spoke Irish, this problem would almost entirely disappear. It is impossible to have your own internet spaces if you’re a small English speaking country.

These far-right dickheads definitely think things were better when snot nosed Etonian Brit toffs ran the place don’t they.

Trump is not looking to take over the world. What he wants is the world as a MAGA franchise – just insert your country name and pay some fees and loyalty to corporate America. So the franchise is white nationalist, Christian supremacist, anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrant and crony capitalism. If you hear Ireland discussed in alt-right American circles, they’ve picked the guy they want running the MIRA franchise – Conor McGregor. Trump flat-out loves the guy.

US far right influence needs to fuck right off, the mental gymnastics is insane, they dont want immigrants from anywhere, anti muslim, anti just about everything, yet they are the country and people most involved in almost every conflict or inner destabilisation or blatant explotation of every nation that has people migrating in hope of better lives.

Yet this is literally what the US Far right are voting to keep doing

This only works if folks believe the social media posts are the genuine expressions of actual Irish people. But you all know they’re not so just point and laugh. Or block the accounts posting shite.

There is a certain irony on an American lobby group attempting to influence this country complaining about American lobbying influencing ireland

That’s not going to work… what do they want? Bring back the 1950s? Angry nuns and clergy with sticks and having to keep warm by huddling around a candle? Nobody has any deludedly positive faux nostalgia about the past here.

    >I think we should get the parachute because we’re great. In fact, I think we should get both parachutes, in case one of them doesn’t work

  15. Available_Dish_1880 on

The Yanks and the Brits may want to go back to the 1950’s but surely nobody in Ireland wants this!

For Ireland this really just amounts to the politics of:

“BRING BACK WORLD CUP 90! SEND THEM ALL BACK BUT THAT PAUL MCGRATH FELLA! THE CHIPS ARE GONE TOO DEAR”

And then moaning about the fucking “Indians” stopping the healthcare system from falling apart.

  17. American cultural influence cuts both ways though. Right *and* left.

I can’t take you seriously if you want to pick and choose. There’s either too much American cultural influence *across the board* – or it’s not an issue. You can’t pretend one side is being influenced and aren’t thinking for themselves, but the other side is unaffected.

  18. Yes, the slogan is dumb, but that being all people have to say in response to this kind of shite is stupid and ignores issues. It wasn’t effective in the states to counter with “Well, when was it so great!” and it won’t be effective here. Just because you think you have a gotcha, doesn’t mean you’re going to convince anyone of your argument.

I like the idea of sending my kids to the local hedge school. MIGA!

  20. Nothing says Irish nationalists like copying English nationalists.
