Pay all junior doctors and carers in the UK a minimum of £15 per hour.

Pay for it by doubling the Energy (Oil and Gas) Profits Levy from current 35% to 70%, by applying National Insurance Contributions on rental income and by ending North Sea oil and gas company subsidies.

The money has always been there, its just in the hands of the wrong people who aren’t letting it flow through the economy and are instead grinding it to a halt by letting it sit unspent in bank accounts.

If we don’t have a functioning and capable health service in this country that is being properly run by resident doctors, then we’re not going to have much of a country left.

Pull out your finger Wes, put aside your ego and give them a pay rise.

Well, that seems to have gone down like a cup of cold sick.

I think offers like these are all ‘optics’, designed to fail but also to engineer a media narrative of government generosity responded to with truculence.

This is not a real offer. There is no timeline for uk graduate prioritisation, merely an “aim”. There is no increase in jobs, just a temporary conversion of trust jobs to training jobs. This won’t affect future generations of doctors. Most importantly it doesn’t address pay erosion. The government has recommended a pay “increase” of 2% for next year. Inflation is predicted at 4.5%. 1 year of labour pay rise and a commitment to working with doctors followed by the same old pay erosion we are used to. A vote for yes in this is a vote to sink the profession. It is telling the next generation of residents that they are worth less than their predecessors for more complex patients, a worse of health service and a sicker society. It has always been a choice how this country spends its money.

Don’t be fooled – this is an offer of nothing, a desperate attempt to avoid the upcoming strikes.

There is no change to pay, doctors still make significantly less than they did in 2010. The “additional” places that they are offering aren’t actually new jobs, they’re expanded LED posts, which are different to national training posts, and have less formal progression. In addition to this, these aren’t guaranteed to materialise in 2026, and even if they do, over half of doctors aiming to specialise will not have roles, leaving them unemployed. And on top of all of that, this expanded number of roles is not permanent, and will only last for an additional year.

Wes Streeting is a disgusting, misleading rat, and doctors should reject this new offer

Since the other commenters appear more educated, would anyone be willing to inform me as to how a resident doctors pay relative to 2010/pre-2008 compares to other professions?

I’m definitely a strong proponent that all services should be paid appropriately, but I imagine there should be a set out timeline. We can’t necessarily have all professions expect inflation matched pay raises backdated can we?

This is just spin for the press.

    The offer was hot ass

It’s easy to say what you want while in opposition isn’t it. Labour said they would sort out this pay deal/ strikes if elected and they did, at the time. Now let’s see them do it again.

They were given one of the largest pay rises in history and still demand more. The government spends £200,000 on every medical student. They should all have £200,000 added to their debt.

  9. Spamgrenade on

Not a snowball in hells chance that these guys will get the enormous raise they are demanding. And I very very much doubt that anyone defending them would be willing to pay a penny more in tax to help them out.
