*“What we once called the normative West no longer exists in this form. At best, it is still a geographical designation, but no longer a normative bond that holds us together.”*

Spot on! The time has come to resurrect the 1952 Defence Union 🇪🇺 favored by Konrad Adenauer. The plans were very advanced and include a European Army.

Europeans must become sovereign and masters of their own destiny.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the rules-based alliance of normative values once binding the US and Europe has come to an end, posing unprecedented challenges for his country.

“What we once called the normative West no longer exists in this form,” Merz said at an event for employers in Berlin on Tuesday. “At best, it is still a geographical designation, but no longer a normative bond that holds us together.”

The new US national security strategy published last week has made it clear that Vice President JD Vance’s speech lambasting Europe in February at the Munich Security Conference was not a slip-up, but the beginning of a US strategic realignment, Merz said.

“This affects foreign policy, security policy, and also European policy, insofar as it exists,” he said.

Speaking to reporters earlier on Tuesday, the center-right leader described elements of the new US strategy as unacceptable to Europe and advised President Donald Trump to avoid going it alone.

The German leader said he wasn’t surprised by the document given that Vance had made similar points advocating an “America First” approach in his February speech.

It was seen as further confirmation that the US has turned its focus closer to its own backyard and sees a misalignment between Trump’s “America First” doctrine and European nations like Germany that help comprise the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

“It confirms my assessment that we in Europe, and therefore also in Germany, must become much more independent from the US in terms of security policy,” he added.

Jesus Christ. What a traitor. We need unity.

It’s basically Europe, Canada, New Zealand, Australia. That’s the west now.

The rest can (mostly) be summer up as despots. Authoritarians or as compromised and the former.

Rearming needs to be our priority.

EU needs to purge the U.S./Russia backed media and social media from its territory or you’ll just capitulate from the inside if you haven’t already

How many breakups and slaps in the face do we need? It’s over!

You can’t wait and hope for the mid-terms. It will not be allright. If they let it come this far, it’s already too late.

While it’s somewhat reassuring that the US House has rebuked the President’s National Security Strategy, it’s getting quite scary how far this is going.

They want to have no part of the global community, while simultaneously wanting to dominate it.

How do you reason with paradoxical thoughts like that? They basically just want to impulsively act on anything they can think of. _Hating Britain today?_ Tariffs. _Hating Ukraine tomorrow?_ No javelins for you. _Australia fining some social media company?_ That’s anti-free speech, threatens AUKUS.

He begged Europe to stop buying oil from Russia in his first term, and now he seemingly feels the opposite. At best, they’re unreliable. But at worst …they might actually be an adversary.

It’s crazy how European leaders say this & then in the very same breath deny the UK access to SAFE funds

Then start acting like it. Stop sucking up to Trump and tell him to fuck off.

Whilst I agree that is currently the case, idk how good of an idea it is to say it out loud and also to act like it’s permanent. This is exactly what Russia wanted. They wanted a split between Europe and America

We should be careful to give them exactly what they want. Obviously we need to become more independent and be cautious. But we also need to not cut ties permanently and hope that the US can come back to normal in the next 5 years

So can we finally ban all foreign “social media” including reddit and get domestic ones? everyone including our children are now about to get riled up against the EU by the two superpowers and Russia because the algorithms are in our future enemys hands

Maybe they are learning after all! Only two decades too late.

The right wing rhetoric seems to be wining the propaganda war, Europe really does need to act quickly and grow a pair. Cut down committee meeting after meeting.

America isn’t our friend and the sooner we get over that the better, Europe has been so passive letting the Shit Stains of America rule the roost.

I believe Europe has more power than it thinks it has its just rode the shirtails of America for way too long. It needs a surgical separation immediately.

He says this stuff a lot (which is good) but NEVER follows it up with actions towards a Federal Europe (or any other similar structure) – instead he begs the US to go “back to normal” or pretends that things will get back to normal in a few years.

Either he is too ideologically stuck on Atlanticism, or he doesn’t even dare to voice that his citizens (especially the CDU’s golden goose, the pensioners) might have to foot the bill for European Sovereignity.

Let’s take note he mentions the norms as we knew them don’t exist, which is a direct response to the US’ major shift away from securing Europe and perhaps even NATO. But is not an obituary on Western principles or cooperation. It isn’t a statement of every man for themself.

If the US will both legally and materially follow-through on their position then there will be a transition period while the US shuffles its resources.

Europe would be wise to offer public statements of strategy and intent. So far, the EU seems to avoid talking to EU citizens or making anything clear.

The feeling is As long as EU countries individually re-arm then we can expect a future situation of internal aggression or war. Without the EU sharing its vision of a future with the US. People are confused by misinformation and fear.

But if the EU – emphasis on the Union part – can share a clear worldview with an aligned statement of intent and strategy then I think Europe will continue to strengthen as a whole and future-proof its existence.

  19. Someone in the EU need to refer to Aragon’s speech at the Battle of the Black Gate:

A day may come when then courage of men fails. When we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day.

An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day!

    This day we fight!

By all that you hold dead on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!
