Ho visto Amble all’Olympia l’anno scorso e potevi sentire uno spillo cadere. Concerto stupendo. Ora sono sinceramente scoraggiato dagli spettacoli della 3Arena. Qualcun altro lo nota?

For me the David gray gig took the biscuit. Ever since covid people are gone feral
That’s pretty awful, it makes not sense going there if you don’t want to listen. If you just want it as background music stay home or in the pub and listen to it on a speaker. No need to ruin it for everyone else.
It’s wild the full blown conversations people do have during gigs. It’s usually got nothing to do with the gig either.
I’d say its more the music than the venue thats to blame to be honest.
Saw Nile Rodgers few years ago and same with cunts with smartphones talking and taking selfies. Fuck off to the bar if you want to do that
Cocaine is a hell of a drug
> are people actually getting more ignorant
Yes, yes they are. And the ubiquity of phones and social media means a lot of people are going to gigs just to tell others that they are/were there, and to show off. They might not have any interest in the act performing, probably couldn’t name you more than a couple of songs if asked. And it’s not just younger people and younger acts, could be anywhere and everywhere.
Same as the people who pay 10-20 euro to go to the cinema, then act like they’re at home with a group of friends watching the telly. Why bother when all you want to do is yap and use your phone?! Just stay home and spare the rest of us who do care about what we’re watching or listening to. GRRRRR…..
I suspect it’s the gigs you are going too. A good proportion of the crowd for an Amble or CM gig know a few songs from the radio so use the more unknown songs as an opportunity to chat/go to the bar.
It’s hard for me to see friends as everyone has families so gigs are a good way to catch up.
I go to gigs to catch up, drink and listen to music. We always stay down the back though.
It might be an Irish problem. I was at Radiohead in London a few weeks ago and during the quiet parts of their songs you could hear a pin drop. That was a bigger venue than the 3 arena too.
Its the usual with bigger older bands where its a nostalgia crowd there to take one video for social media and say they seen insert “X” in this case Christy Moore
This is unfortunately the norm at any popular gig nowadays, basically everything in the 3Arena. There’s still magic to be found at the really small gigs, but it only takes a small number of cunts to turn up and ruin the vibe.
I remember being at a gig in Workmans Club, and everyone was silent, the band were playing a slow, emotional number, it was like 30 minutes into the show, when 4 cunts in their office attire pushed their way up to the stage (where I was) and yapped amongst each other, completely oblivious to the vibe they were killing. One lad kept saying things like “these lot are really good! How’d you hear of them?? Great suggestion! Class that we could get tickets at the door. Have you seen them before?” etc etc etc until about 15 minutes later they copped the daggers they were getting from everyone around them.
Not sure you can blame the venue. I have been to gigs there where the crowd has been expectedly quiet during the artists performance. I have a sense it may be related to the clientile of the artist more than the venue
If the gig is really good then people tend to shut up and listen
Saw Kraftwerk in the Olympia in 2004. This was when they were just returning to touring, so seeing them live was a major event.
A guy in front of us stood with his back to the stage for the entire gig talking to two people who clearly had no interest in the conversation. He was wearing sunglasses, and was quite animated and passionate about whatever he was rambling about. They stood looking at the stage, not replying to him except for an odd nod in his direction, and he just talked and talked and talked. He didn’t turn around once to see the show.
One thing that has changed is Irish people used to crave being acknowledged as ‘the best crowd’ on the tour. Back in the 90s we didn’t get as many big acts touring through here. They’d be throwing Irish flags on stage and giving it socks.
Nowadays people literally couldn’t give a shit about that. Our inferiority complex is gone. Now they just turn up and wait to be entertained, contributing nothing positive to the event (the opposite, mostly). What really blow me away now is crowds sometimes barely even make any noise for the encore. It’s actually embarrassing, the band leave the stage, are waiting to come back out, and the crowd are standing there in silence waiting for them.
Was at a gig and couldn’t enjoy it because some lad decided to film it instead of just enjoying it.
Surely once the music starts it’s pretty much all you can hear anyway no?
Even if a pub is playing loud music it can be near impossible to hear the person next to you without shouting
I’ve not noticed it being bad for headliners before but I’ve seen an awful tradition of people just talking over the openers since COVID. Happened with the Olllam (the support act was a local guy who was their guitar player for Christ’s sake) and Amble. People just talk because it’s not who they’re there for. Ridiculously rude. I’ve only seen it at trad bands so far but that could just be because it’s who I’ve gone to see in smaller venues.
Coem to Germany, we are to stingy to waste money with talking during a concert😂
Had the exact same behind me at the last dinner party. Full on yapping even during quieter parts of songs where everyone nearby could hear them. The ignorance is insane. Why pay that much money to not pay attention to the music.
Yeah it’s bad. Really bad. For some gigs I’ve been to fans started mass shushing to make it quieter at least for some of the songs. Doesn’t help for too long unfortunately.
It’s a few factors but alcohol (and now drugs) is the main factor. Also how much disposable income we have now means that people can afford to pay €80 x 2 to go to a gig that they effectively ignore and then pay for expensive pints on top of that.
Also we can afford to bring along the partner/spouse that has no interest in the band so they just get pissed and find someone to chat because they’re bored.
This is why I never buy seated tickets anymore. The last straw for us was a Massive Attack gig years ago in the Olympia and we were seated upstairs in front of two couples. They were basically giving each other their life stories, weddings, kids schools, shopping, work stories etc etc. I had to ask them to stop which they did but they had some fucking faces on them when I did. Generally now with standing you can get away from them but that video above is a nightmare, I agree it’s basically a giant pub
Left ben Howard early because of this. Lads vaping and chatting through every song in the Olympia, was horrible
This is a slightly different take.
Back in the old days bands etc had to learn to grab the audience’s attention and this was a skill learned by doing many many gigs.
Less chat, no tuning for ages, being tight and kicking.
There was an old saying: ‘if the people are talking – you’re playing shite!’
Then when they got spotted they got signed and records released etc.
Nowadays bands record first and are then put on stage because that’s where they can earn money.
I’m of the school of thought that if nobody is listening I’m shite on the night.
Ah sure people buy cinema tickets to spend the whole movie having a wee chat! People have no manners or awareness of others.
It’s the type of crowd the band attracts…I was at Wolf Alice the night before in 3arena and there was no talking like this. Everyone’s attention was glued to the stage.
And up and down for pint after pint.
Then up and down for a piss out the pints.
To top it, you get a clip of a concert posted on YouTube and think ‘yeah, I can check out what the band sound like’ only to hear the mobile phone videographer chatting or singing away at the top of their voice but of tune.
Different genres or bands attract different types of audience chatter.
Really gotten bad in the last few years, saw Damien Dempsey at Iveagh Gardens last summer and it was happening right up to the front, people not even facing the stage just roaring and chatting with their mates. Really ruins the gigs and it’s putting me off going to more with the price im paying for it.
With the death of night clubs and reduction in drinking, concerts have become much more of a social event.
People will organise to meet at a gig or go together.
If you get a group of people who barely meet together in any situations, they will chat.
On the specific examples of the video, I know amble are quiet soft music in the main, but the first song is so quiet, even if people werent talking you wouldn’t be able to hear it.
Don’t take this the wrong way but generally people who listen to acts like Amble don’t really care about music that much and treat it as more of a night out. Not saying this applies to all Amble fans, but quite a few of them from what I’ve seen
I think there’s a few factors cos Iv seen it change so much over the years too and it’s definitely changed my own approach to which gigs I go to.
1. Cocaine, cocaine, cocaaaaaaine – literally everyone is on it and they just never shut the fuck up
2. Venue specific, some venues definitely attract more of a piss up group than a genuine fan, bigger venues happily sell as much drink as they can cos it makes them money.
3. Artist/ band specific, unfortunately popular mainstream acts will attract crowds of shite music fans who aren’t really fans at all they just know 2 songs. Iv really focused on heavier music these days for gigs and the quieter ones have been ruined so many times.
4. This obsession that Irish people have with going to events as a night out – for a country where we’re all meant to be dirt broke everyone I know in work would pay €80 for the opening of a letter if there was a bar at it. Back in the day people didn’t seem to go to as many gigs/ matches unless they actually cared about it.
Tiktok generation. Spend 90% talking, 9% taking YOLO pics and 1% listening.
Get over yourselves. People paid for admittance and are allowed to chat to each other. Music overlords are the worst. You’re going to a concert with 1000s of other people, most of which are there to simply enjoy an evening not be told how to enjoy a concert from others.
Jesus christ that’s infuriating
People are inconsiderate fucks. It’s not exactly new really.
Baffles me that you’d spend that money on a ticket only to treat it as background music in a pub.
There are options to move if you’re standing of course but it shouldn’t be the case.
The vast majority of people there are there to hear two or three of their big/known songs. This is what you get at major mainstream acts
Wouldn’t be familiar with Amble, so not sure what type of fans they draw, but the crowd does seem very tame though. Like more casual fans.
I can see they did 3 gigs in 3Arena and the first one sold out, so guessing most mega fans went to that one? Probably would’ve been the better one for you.
Would also point out that in first video you are standing miles back for some reason and the sound setup from the stage is probably pretty low for this type of music.
You should’ve gone to Ash in Dublin last night instead- amps on full blast so good luck trying to chat!😀😎
It’s the height of ignorance. It really is particularly during quiet songs.
Amble are great but they’re the trendy gig to be at for a lot of people. A good portion of attendees want to hear 1 or 2 songs they know, get the Instagram story and carry on with their night. I’d imagine at the Kingfishr gig later in the week it will be the same, those people will arse around for 90% of the gig and go fully into it when they play Killeagh.
With time, bands shake off that crowd as they tend to move onto the next thing
Wouldn’t have had that shite at a Slayer gig in the Academy in my day. You might’ve come out with tinnitus and a black eye, but you definitely heard the band over everything else.
I swear to god, nearly came to blows at Hozier in the Point. People talking their way through songs like Shrike and Cherry Wine, like why are you even here? Do you even like Hozier? Or know any songs apart from Take Me To Church?
I was a bit fed up with gigs after going to Foy Vance in the waterfront in Belfast and he had to tell people to shut the fuck up about 4 times from the stage and was visibly pissed off. Could hear the talking and murmur of shit talk over Foy Vance several times. We were standing. Swore I’m done with gigs. Wife bought me tickets the year after for Foy Vance, same venue but no standing all fully seated and couldn’t hear a pin drop.
Went to Declan O’Rourke in Derry recently. There was about 5 older men and women who wouldn’t shut the fuck up the whole way through and after about 6 chances security through them out. It was fabulous. Was absolutely delighted to see some repercussions for just being a general all round selfish bunch of cunts..
