On December 14, Ukraine honors those who risked their health and lives to overcome the Chornobyl disaster. In 1986, Soviet lies and criminal negligence resulted in the worst man-made nuclear disaster in history. Officials tried to hide the explosion, kept people in the dark, and even held parades while radiation spread. In February 2025, a Russian combat drone hit the New Safe Confinement, a structure designed to contain the consequences of the tragedy. Then, in November, the Russian attack killed the widow of one of the liquidators. Russia is targeting the same people whose lives it shattered once before.
