Ordinary people have no idea what 10 years of technological development will do to things like batteries. They assume that EVs will be pretty much the same in 2035 as now, and they absolutely won’t be. Buying a new ICE vehicle in 2035 is going to be insane whether they are available or not
No_Fee1458 on
Ban makes no sense, people will freely and gradually make the transition to EVs when they become cheap enough, when the infrastructure is ready etc.
If I was to buy an EV I’d have to charge it at a place that is 3 tram stops and 10 minute walk away from where I live aasnd it’s 2 chargers.

So first they banned it which caused the manufacturers to invest heavily into EV tech, which in turn caused prices to spike. Then came Chinese brands which flooded the market with cheap EVs which again caused losses for European car brands. Now they’ll allow ICE after 2035. So they fucked the EU car market for the past years and now that they started to stabilize they again cause instability and uncertainty. Good job EU

It is not a surprise, multiple studies show that in general people are very into green policies as long others are paying, support for green policies from our own pocket is much lower.
the 2035 ban does not make any sense anyways, at best should be a limited ban like city centers and things like that.

Almost two thirds of them are morons.
I have talked to a lot of people regarding several policies, e mobility being one of them. And, while certainly anecdotal, the sheer amount of people who think that their car is going to be banned in 2035 was staggering high.
With the carbon pricing in effect, which is the market solution that the conservative parties proposed, in 2030 fossile fuel will become so expensive, people wont buying combustion cars anymore.
Well, that is, if we don’t revoke carbon pricing – which of course is entirely possible with people voting for right wing parties.
But regardless of that: the „good“ part is, that German car manufacturers will go bankrupt anyway if they don’t switch to electric mobility due to high demand on global markets. Germanys economy is mostly export driven and if they don’t accommodate the needs of where they export to … well.

Insane. Europe and Germany need to seriously reflect on their view on innovation. Clinging on to a 100 year industrial tradition just for the sake of it is insane. Sticking to these old jobs and old manufacturing processes will tank the whole ship. Why not use all those resources and drive something new.
The technology could go into novel products instead. Sure some adjustment is needed, but it will save everyone’s ass on the long-term.
Suzumebachi14 on
Why do you think that the EV vehicles sales have plateaued here too ? Because they are overly expensive and still have poor autonomy, plus the recharging is still very long too. When you live in a rural area like me, buying an EV makes no sense. Oh, and they also age very badly, so if you want to resell it, you’re screwed because its value will have dropped sharply. I don’t know much people who own one, and there is no way that anyone I know will buy one in the near future. At least, there are still the hybrid vehicles which are more worth it. But banning combustion engines by 2035 is completely retarded, and not realistic at all. And it will also cripple further the european car manufacturers that have to face the US and chinese manufacturers when all the EU politicians are trying to rely less on them. What a wonderful idea indeed.

The public opinion is skewed.
1) Lots of people believe it’s about existing cars as well. Conservatives frame it as „combustion ban“ so massive amounts believe their combustion car will have to be replaced in 2035, which was never true.
2) Even before the change it was possible to have cars registered when powered by e-fuel. But now they realize how fkn expensive it is to run cars on e fuel
3) I‘m a bit torn if a ban is needed. The market is decided already. It’s electric. So a ban in theory is irrelevant. However what might happen is that no ban dilutes the focus from the car manufacturers as they see: Oh shit, competition for EVs is hard. Let’s get some more profits for ICE first and in a few years I’m gone here anyway.
IF all companies truly elect a long term strategy, they are going to go electric anyway. But that’s not how this management hopping works. They have incentives for big profits now. Not in 10 years.
gaunernick on
Funny thing: the EU has moved the emission cut from 100% to 90%.
So it’s not like anyone is bringing back the V8 for mass market vehicles for the petrol heads. All ICE vehicles need to be some sort of mild hybrid or even Plug-in Hybrid, with the majority of sold cars having to be EVs in order to reach the 90% goal.
E-Fuel is a solution, but only if 90% of the ICE cars on the road can use it. For now it seems it’s even scarcer than hydrogen.
So all I can see is, that car companies don’t have to invest more money and can use their existing assets to churn out profit for another 10 years.

Either you get an electric car at the cost of some congolese child slaves that are going to be poor for the rest of their short lives and destroying the congo along with destroying the environment during the construction process
Or you buy a petrol car and you damage the environment less when the car is being built, and at less human cost. But over the life of the car more GHGs go into the atmosphere.
Kinda seems like the problem isn’t petrol/electric. It’s that we shouldn’t be buying new cars. Where’s the call for the ban on cars for single individuals that just use it for intra city commute?
