I don’t like the idea of fighting as much as the next soft internet person, but I always find it suspicious how these threads inevitably get filled with default name accounts, who desperately try to convince us that there is no threat to the UK and that the government making basic defence precautions is akin to fascism.

So we’re to be ready to fight but who exactly? They’ve lost god know how many people and equipment getting nowhere in Ukraine so what chance have they got of getting anywhere near the UK?

Most young enough to fight can barely afford to live at the moment and are funding an ever growing and expensive set of OAPs which no political party dare touch funding wise.
Come fight and die in a trench in Europe and then be grateful and go back to your shared house or bed sit on a council estate.

Start with getting the hundreds of billions of quids worth of Russian money out of our capital and out of influencing our politics.
Also, if this ever turns out to be the case, it proves our nuclear deterrent isn’t worth what we’re spending on it and also it would be a devastating failure of the management of our armed forces if this was needed.
Also, if one NATO nation is attacked they’ll have the armies of multiple nations to back them up – as ours would. So why do they want the local untrained randomer getting in the way anyway? Cannon fodder?
I’m too old now anyway but if I wast I’d go to jail long before I’d go abroad and fight a traditional war. Sure if they come to my local Sainsbury’s car park I might have a go if they give us a shotgun or two.

There’s a difference between fighting Russia and defending your home. I genuinely believe most people would be willing to fight if Russia was on Britain’s border but totally understand why most people wouldn’t want to go Eastern Europe to fight.

The phrase isn’t ’pleasantly surprised’ (as the scenario is far from pleasant) but I think a lot of naysayers would be proven wrong about levels of engagement and recruitment.

When you have 100 year old ww2 vets on TV say there’s nothing worth fighting for anymore there’s not going to be a lot of young people sign up.
I’m sure most people would rather learn Russian than fight to protect the billionaires. Vets are treated so badly in this country and they are the ones that went to war, and when they come home are left to sleep on the streets with ptsd.

Nobody wants to get involved with a War with Russia or anyone. That doesn’t mean they’re Russian agents or otherwise. And UK being the USA’s lapdog in all it’s petty conflicts has just made us fair game for so many.

That is the pertinent point to me. As Russia has invaded Ukraine, despite the disastrous performance they are on a war footing. The only way to maintain a war footing for long is to continue taking ground and resources to feed the beast. Putting the sensationalised headline aside, we probably do need to be more committed to our defence and infrastructure, before it’s too late.
And what will our politicians be doing? Sitting on their asses as usual.
It’s horrible but realistic that these conversations need to be had, with the current state of play. Russia is a different animal to anything we’ve seen in our lifetimes (unless you are old enough to remember Hitler). Even during the Cold War, I think there was more method and calculation from their leadership. Now, it’s just pure, visceral hatred and aggression towards the west. I wouldn’t be surprised by any acts of hostility from Putin towards European countries.
Is Britain a country worth dying for now though? I’m really not sure. It doesn’t feel much like a homeland for me these days. People flooding in illegally, our own people losing their sense of society, the economy in tatters. The decay is everywhere
I can’t remember a time ‘army chiefs’ didn’t want a bigger army and say war was imminent, this time though it could happen but Russia has had so much trouble bogged down in Ukraine how can they tackle most of Europe? The Great Britain of old doesn’t exist anymore. Where’s our steels works in Port Talbot.? We couldn’t match the output of tanks, aircraft, ships produced in WW2 because the industry doesn’t exist anymore. It’s all been exported to Asia. The only good thing is that all of the immigrants that have invaded our shores will be the first one’s to leave if the shit hits the fan. Covid lockdowns, tuition fees, student loans, a broken jobs market, expensive rents, impossibility of ever owning a home, persistent underfunding of schools and children’s services, being demonised in the media as lazy and feckless, etc.
