Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that German troops could participate in a coalition to secure a demilitarized zone in Ukraine after a possible peace agreement under rules that would permit them to “retaliate against corresponding Russian incursions and attacks.”
“We are not there yet,” Merz told public broadcaster ZDF. The chancellor expressed optimism that Russian President Vladimir Putin would eventually have to agree to a settlement. “Putin has said ‘nyet’ to many things, at some point he will also have to say ‘yes’ to something when it’s about ending this war,” he said.
The presence of German troops on territory of the former Soviet Union is a sensitive issue due to the atrocities committed by Nazi troops in the region during World War II.

Its never going to happen, this entire discussion about sending western troops is a joke.
European leaders have had 4 years to support ukraine in a meaningful way and have repeatedly decided not to.
They could have sent more gear, but didnt. They could have pushed policy to actually significantly expand the european defense industrial base, they didnt.
They could have imposed a no fly zone over western ukraine, in areas where russian planes cant go anyway, to at least shoot down the drones and missiles, but they chose not to do it.
There is literally not a single actual sign of any willingness to put european troops and russian troops into any sort of confrontation, even if its just us shooting their drones.
How anyone thinks those same leaders will send any soldiers to back up a peace when there is a real possibility of renewed fighting is a mystery to me…

What, the entire squad of Germans?
‘Cause I read that they had a hard time scraping together a battalion for a foreign peace mission engagement not that long ago (before this war).

In the current state they could counter them for couple of days, tops. Russia has 360k troops in Belarus alone… This is all bullshit! People need to understand that its impossible to win against Russia in conventional warfare, it’s simple mathematics…

This makes a lot of sense from a military perspective. Newly rebuilt Bundeswehr needs for their troops to gain experience in the field, and there’s no better training ground than logistic support operations in Ukraine.
Although it is clear that Putin would not have the balls to attack German positions (if clearly market and contained to specific zones), it is questionable if Germans will understand this policy.
