Why not continue that on, build down the M7 and up to the M1? Build a ring road for your ring road. And then when that gets backed up, build another ring road outside that.

Building more ring roads further and further out from the M50 is probably the only way we’ll eventually get a motorway between Limerick and Cork.

What % of traffic going in either road and out the other?

  4. “All engineers quit just one lane before solving the traffic problem”

Induced demand will see it fill up. The solutions to our problems don’t lie in more roads, they lie in alternatives so that the roads we do have work better.

  5. Legal-Actuary4537 on

not enough traffic would be removed from M50 to justify the cost. it would be effective but not effective enough.

The M50 isn’t the problem. Spatial planning Dublin and its hinterland over the last 50 years is the problem.

  6. emperorduffman on

The issue is all roads leading to Dublin, they need way more rail and a subway. and to divert the population away from Dublin, build up a major city in the midlands

  7. Even-Space on

They are building a road around maynooth that does kind of increase access to the m4 from the m3

  8. Toffeeman_1878 on

I’m sure I saw somewhere that they have studied the possibility of an outer radial route. But the M50 would still be overloaded. The recommendation was to complete the M50 and transform it from a “C” to a complete ring road. That would allow traffic to move North and South over two directions (West and East).

  9. Spare-Buy-8864 on

A simpler and cheaper one would be to connect the R136 with the R121 as it already forms a semi ring road and would take a lot of local traffic off the M50

There’s been an ideological shift in recent years though where it seems like our existing road network is as good as it gets regardless of population growth or the existing network being at capacity, so I can’t see anything happening

Not a dig at you op, but we’ve seen time and again, that more roads is not the way to resolve congestion as it ALWAYS leads to more cars on the road

The only way to remove cars from the roads is to offer viable, more convenient, more cost effective, sustainable modes of transport, whether they be through road space reallocation (bus lanes, bike lanes, paths, filtered permeability) or new off-road infrastructure (rail, metro).

And yes, that includes extensive use of the “stick” and not just the “carrot” as one will not be enough without the other

This is the long term govt strategy as per the [Demand Management Strategy](https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-transport/press-releases/new-national-demand-management-strategy-aims-to-reduce-congestion-and-free-up-our-cities-and-towns/) but there’s a lot of politically unpalatable actions in it (congestion charges, parking levies, removal of on street parking etc) so its likely to fail and congestion will remain an ongoing issue for decades to come

    Lets build another road

Fuck me when will Ireland ever learn that another road is not the answer

Building train links is the answer, not more fecking roads

The train to Navan, start M3 parkway Dart, put in metro, build more Luas is the answer

    Not another fucking road

  12. RomfordWellington on

    Just one more lane bro.

Orbital Metrolink is a much better idea.

    Clongriffin – Airport – Charlestown – Ballycoolin/Sport Ireland – Connolly Hospital – Blanchardstown – Coolmine – Liffey Valley – Fonthill – Clondalkin – Red Cow – Tallaght – Firhouse – Ballyboden – Ballinteer – Sandyford – Galloping Green – Blackrock

  13. wascallywabbit666 on

Because that’ll fill up with cars too.

If we have spare money it should be spent on the rail network

  14. IntrepidCycle8039 on

We need another ring road around Dublin but the major issue is lack of public transport

  15. PremiumTempus on

If anything, it needs to be built between the N4 and the N7. Between those junctions is consistently the busiest/ most car park stretch of the M50. I think this road is justified, even in the context of zero investment in public transport infrastructure. It is needed as well.

  16. cmere-2-me on

Because it will cost a fortune and still not solve tue problem. The more road you build the more cars it will attract. They just need to get on and build a dependable transport system.

  17. It should really be further out, NAAS >> Maynooth >> Dunshauglin >> Ashbourne >> North Dublin and connect to M1

  18. thats_pure_cat_hai on

If there’s one thing we do not need, maybe barring some extreme circumstances, it’s more fucking roads. The country is absolutely full of roads that are partially responsible for decimating our eco system and wildlife. And that’d only the construction of them, studies have shown more roads = more cars, and like the roads, if there’s one thing we don’t need more, is fucking cars.

People seem to have no problem when 300 million is spent on a road upgrade that will shave 5 minutes off a journey, but God forbid that 300 million was put into public transit.

  19. _PuRe_AdDicT_ on

Nobody is driving from Mullingar to the M50 to go to Navan or vice versa

The problem is 100% North <-> South Dublin and Airport traffic

  20. -SideshowBlob- on

Build it further out. The area around Lucan/Leixlip is basically a valley, not easy to stick a motorway down. It’s what the M50 goes over at the N4 junction.

  21. Cill-e-in on

The real solution is building good enough public transport to get thousands of cars off the road.

  22. No_Influence_9549 on

More roads and bigger roads mean more traffic. There may be some merit in this for different reasons, but to sort out our traffic issues, I believe we need something like 50% more buses. They shouldn’t be profit making, they should be providing a service. Run at a loss, get people where they need to on time and get everything moving.

  23. brentspar on

    A few thoughts,
You would have to build a bridge across the Liffey, at a technically difficult point.
You would sterilise a massive parcel of land, much of which is earmarked for housing development.
You would induce more traffic on to the road network so any benefit would short lived.
It would cost a fortune as a lot of the land you indicated is zoned for development and therefore very valuable, on top of the cost of the road and the bridge.
The people already living in the m4 to m3 would not like it.

An easier solution would be to invest in public transport and give people an alternative to the car.

  24. Against_All_Advice on

Is there anything to be said for building another road?

  25. GoldheistFintan on

Eastern bypass under dublin bay might be a solution. It was first suggested in the 70s I believe (open to correction)

  26. THEMIKEPATERSON on

Just one more lane bro, I swear everything will be fine then.

  27. Intelligent-Aside214 on

Because it won’t solve traffic. This is proven, no amount of road building will reduce traffic in a growing city.

And for that you destroy a beautiful natural area

  28. Full_Assignment666 on

There was discussion of an outer ring motorway that would connect the M7, 4, 3, and 2. Not sure what happened to it

  29. Welshgit01 on

Part of the problem, in normal conditions and not last night, is that the exits and entries on to the M50 are too close together and also in part because of the shite drivers using it.

We wouldn’t need another ring road if we used the one we have efficiently, perhaps by not having heavy goods vehicles at certain times or maybe by enforcing traffic laws and reg’s.

  30. clownsinadarkforest on

Your red line is going right through st Catherine’s park and they have already tried and probably still are looking to build a road through that and there has been a lot of pushback from locals. I’m not sure about the specifics but I remember seeing flyers and posters from people trying to stop it at one stage

  31. Much-Signal3483 on

Lmao build better trains and rails and expand on em. Cars are overrated

  32. FunkLoudSoulNoise on

Because they want you to pay the toll. Any functioning or well planned urban area would have proper roads not the glorified donkey paths connecting these urban areas.

  33. afrogerl on

They should run a monorail along the m50 with spines of metro / train at every exit running from city centre outwards.

  34. GodOfPog on

Just one more road, please, we can do it, just one more road. One more road will finally get us there, I believe we can do it, just one more road, one, one more, one road.
