He should have invited him in and made him tea.

  2. NaturalAlfalfa on

Bit of a misleading headline. He wasn’t an intruder. He broke into the guys car. Killing someone for that is obviously way over the top. An intruder in your house is a very different matter.

  3. Outside_Objective183 on

I mean that’s outrageously over the top. He could’ve just shouted at him and the young fella probably would’ve legged it.

  4. Rinasoir on

Unpopular opinion on here probably, but I think this is well deserved. Going at the man with a knife when he’s breaking into cars (and yes I’ve had cars at my home broken into so I’m aware how shit it is) is a disproportionate response.

If he’d broken into the home? Different matter, but outside the house is where this happened so the court got this right.

  5. Wise-Reality-5871 on

How many previous convinctions did the thief had before being killed ? I mean, if he had been prison, this wouldn’t have happened.

“Mr Ronan was subsequently running down Drumcairn Avenue and looking over his shoulder, before running into a lamppost and collapsing outside.”

    I’m sorry, but I giggled.

  7. Complex_Hunter35 on

It was probably a moment of madness for the person who stabbed the thief. Things happen in the heat of the moment and the sentence is proportionate to the crime. As others have pointed out better to shout and call insurance. People should use reasonable force, if he broke the lads arm that would have been proportionate maybe? I am talking about in the context of defending your property whether it be car or house

  8. followerofEnki96 on

He should have performed the “stop don’t tough me there, this is my no-no square” dance. The thief would have been obliged to leave the house and pay damages.

  9. Leaving your house with a knife to stab someone that is breaking into your car is disproportionate.

  10. ArcherVisible5866 on

He was outside and robbing his car, Running out with a knife and leaping to plung it into their chest is insane behaviour. You can’t defend your property like that unless they attack you

  11. RIFwasmuchbetter on

He wouldn’t have gotten stabbed to death if he wasn’t robbing someone else’s things.

  12. Lonely_Eggplant_4990 on

Never ever ever grab a knife. Nothing good will come of it.

He could have picked up a hurl or a golf club and gone to town on yer mans legs and hands and be still laughing about it down the pub tonight. Alas.

  13. SamSquanch16 on

If he’d grabbed a hurley then the young lad would, most likely, be alive and the property owner not facing a conviction for killing someone.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

No loss to society, except the father who’ll face prison time and his 4 kids will have to visit him in prison.

Breaking into someone’s home / vehicle or stealing their possessions is one of the most egregious forms of invading one’s privacy.

Maybe if there were tangible consequences- be that sentencing or criminals actually facing potential harm; will we see a more responsible society. No to guns in the home by the way.

  15. vinceswish on

Beating should have been enough, even Garda wouldn’t mind that.

Although if this would have been a home invasion I would see no issue with that.

  16. JackhusChanhus on

Good, fatally stabbing someone for trying to steal a car is American shit we do not need. If you must intervene, yell or give him a hidin. Otherwise call the Garda and insurer.

  17. Sad-Orange-5983 on

    >He said only the defence of justifiable force can result in a verdict of not guilty but either justifiable force or provocation can result in a verdict of manslaughter.

Think manslaughter is the right verdict here. It would be a stretch to say it was justifiable so I don’t think ‘not guilty’ would’ve been appropriate.

  18. Ok_Imagination_9334 on

The poor “boy”. Guess he would still be alive if he didn’t break into other people’s stuff..

    Atleast he won’t reoffend.

  19. Thieving has a pretty high turnover rate as far as careers go huh?

  20. romulcah on

Looks like the lad had an interesting funeral from the images. He also has two different surnames for some reason.

  21. cterevinto on

    > “I say that is clearly murder. How could it be anything else to stab a boy in the chest and to do it deliberately, how could you intend anything other than serious injury?” she said.

A 20-years-old is far from “a boy”. He is (was) a man that was breaking into cars, deliberatively.

  22. ThreeTreesForTheePls on

“Intruder” is one *severely* disingenuous title.

He broke into a BMW in a garden and he was stabbed to death because of it. The family were not in danger, he was not in danger, but he saw someone in his BMW, ran out with a knife, and stabbed him in the chest.

Do not get it remotely mixed up, I fucking **hate** the epidemic of thieving bastards we have seen in Dublin and it rises every day.

But fucking come on, running out into your garden with a knife, then screaming that you’re protecting your family is absolutely madness.

Well sentenced, feel for the family, but if we start supporting a form of vigilante justice in which we all say “fuck around and find out” as if breaking into a BMW is worthy of a literal death sentence..

Cmon now lads some of you are a bit over the edge here and it’s extremely disconcerting.

  23. Final_Tradition_3439 on

That cunt of a prosecutor, calling the 20 year old thief a ‘boy’ in her closing remarks, is despicable

  24. strokejammer on

The amount of wankers here pretending they’d jump into action and kill someone is laughable! Fuck off the lot of you with your yankee stand your ground bullshit!

This guy was not in any danger. He put himself in danger!
If someone is breaking into your shit, then call the guards or get a dog.
I have thousands in tools and equipment in my yard, but if left my woman and kids to go confront someone breaking in, my wife would have a fit!
I definitely would not be seen as a hero…
Those of you saying you’d do the same as this guy are absolutely full of it!

  25. stretchmurph on

That’s a pity. He should’ve been given a medal and the freedom of the city.
And yes I am being serious.

  26. Junior_Life_2375 on

idk maybe he didnt deserve to die but i cant feel bad for people like this especially when you know exactly how they act lmao

  27. Morthicus on

The amount of people defending the criminal in this thread is disgusting. Some people are one thin thread away from ruin and having your car robbed/broken by petty crime like this could easily be the catalyst to ruining someone’s life.

If you’re breaking into cars you deserve to get got.
