Shchedryk was composed in Pokrovsk.

Its composer, Mykola Leontovych, one of the most promising and brilliant of Ukrainian composers was later robbed and assassinated by a soviet Cheka agent who had infiltrated his family home under false pretenses. He died at the age of 43.
