Where are the reformers stepping in to work in the prisons?
or we could maybe try to get those million ish people NEETs (and our growing unemployment rate) to take it up, whilst they wait for a job they are interested in?
Nahh too easy…
UK is a joke. Saying the prison system will collapse without the services of some 2500 immigrants shows the extent of its rot.
Coming over here supporting essential infrastructure….
It is odd that the UK requires immigrants otherwise it collapses…
How are other countries self sufficient with their own population but not the UK??
i used to work in a prison down south that was always dangerously understaffed. easily more than half of the operational support staff were foreign. i think they did a big recruiting drive in Nigeria promising uk visas for work in uk prisons. after the change in qualifying salaries announcement by the gov, the prison did a big callout to all staff offering support for those affected. i really feel for them still working there. sucks to be rug pulled like this. the money isnt great and the area is expensive so they really were just working for the visa.
They stopped recruiting from people leaving the armed forces because it was seen as too aggressive now look what’s happened. Same with the police. Loads of interviews with ex prisoners saying no one fucked with the prison officers because they took no shit off anyone and prisoners respected them. Now prisoners run the jails not the officers.
Temporary extension is sensible.
Switching the country to be self reliant on labour will cause pain at times. Change is often hard.
But it’s the right thing to do. The benefits system, the education system, employment support services, the amount of pay on offer may all have to change. So be it.
Unemployment going up while importing prison guards from Nigeria is madness.
Guessing day-drinkers down the local didn’t go take “there” jobs back after all…
get the native british in there that are complaining about immigrants taking jobs.
let them put their money where their mouths are
When wages are suppressed, you can’t act shocked when you don’t see people applying for jobs, such that you have a labour shortage that you then need to hire migrants to fill because they’re happy to work for the pittance that others don’t
If you disagree with wage rises to address that, you can’t channel that irritation towards migrants for it. Public sector pay isn’t competitive. There’s a reason we’ve been reliant on an access to migrant doctors and nurses for the NHS for instance, because any other doctor would be attracted to a better pay and lifestyle that you get in say, Canada or Australia or New Zealand.
Especially when that job can be stressful as it is
How is it possible to get employment in roles like this, without permanent residency?
so the same people who think immigrants are the reason the country has gone to shit, also want HM prison service to pay better wages to attract more white English prison officers (increasing govt. spending) and also simultaneously want lower taxes…
very sensible
There’s going to be a lot of headlines like this because weaning ourselves off the cheap labour tap (to mix my metaphors a bit) is a big labour market adjustment. Jobs need to pay a lot better and have better conditions to get people to want to do them, especially ones like this which are really hard and unpleasant. When those have been suppressed for years by using cheap immigrant labour to plug the gap, taking that supply away is going to be a big shock.
We need to spend a *lot* more money on these public sector roles to make them attractive, compared to making ยฃ50k sitting at a desk writing computer software, or even ยฃ25k stacking shelves at Aldi.
