So uncompetitive farmers might have actually created the situation where we might get to understand that world isn’t waiting on hands and knees for access to our markets and there is a large world out there and they will move on if we continue to think as if we are the central piece in the cog of international trade.

  2. So fucking stupid, unbelievable the EU is letting this opportunity go.

EU’s just draggin’ their feet at this point, ain’t they? Classic case of bigger fish thinking they can keep the lil’ guys on the line. It’d be a sick plot twist if Mercosur just flips the script and hooks up with less bureaucratic markets tbh. Give ‘em a taste of their own medicine.

I really wonder what you will say if /when EU loses its farming sector as well. Are you that delusional to think that in crisis these countries will provide you with food?
What are the benefits of this deal can you explain cause I don’t get it?
Trying to limit beef production inside the EU due to climate change and importing beef from South America instead makes sense to you ?

CAP is already a disaster, maybe fix that first and import stuff from elsewhere later ?

Farmers once again holding Europe back, what a shock

Europe is losing the Global South. Africa is pretty much gone and now South America.

This is a massive loss for Europe. Europe has 100 reasons to seek deeper ties with South America.

Well long term negotiations aren’t exactly sexy but deals tend to happen one way or another. And this is a deal with more than 30 countries so it’s expected.

Astroturfing on reddit has been through the roof in the last 6 months.

The solution is easy : scrap all our environment regulations and let the farmers compete on equal terms. Unleash the knowledge from BASF.

Who cares about health and environmental standards, kill those pesky bees until there’s none left. And fuck the rain forest.

I wonder what Julius Malema would say about the farmers who torpedoed the deal.

Delayed? It will effectively be cancelled. European agriculture will not accept competition from South American products that don’t meet EU regulatory standards.

Could someone please ELI5 why people in EU are against it and what are the advantages of this deal too?

  14. Good for them. Europeans simply can’t agree on anything if it includes farming sector which is like 1% of European GDP..

‘History is over’ lunatics argue to join unstable systems whose water is controlled by another superpower because number must go up

Jesus christ the eu has 3 more levers to improve production before you need to touch soybeans with a environmental policy of ‘lmao

What was losing industry, energy (twice) and defense not enough for you?

Ffs, deals like this take years to negotiate. It’s not going to implode because of a couple weeks delay.

Same thing happened with Canada and CETA, just some political theatre to get it passed the post 🙄

  17. Here comes the people who like shitty cheap food saying it’s bad that the deal is dead.

Many European foods are renowned for their high quality ingredients. This is why Europeans are among the healthiest people. So yes, this is definitely a win for Europeans that this deal is dead.
