Sapete perché Slovenia e Slovacchia sembrano così simili e hanno bandiere così simili da creare un po’ di confusione? Allora… ho appena scoperto che in slovacco i paesi si chiamano “Slovensko” (che è Slovacchia) e “Slovinsko” (che è Slovenia). Comunque, ecco il nome del tuo paese in slovacco.

Also, why are so many countries missing? And the colors too?

I don’t like how in Czech and Slovak country names are most often neuter nouns. “Polsko” sounds way too similar to “cielsko” imho, like a heavy and bulky barely recognisable body. We’re Polska and we’re totally feminine, this is clear misgendering 😀

How did Rome turn into Rim? Did Remus win that round? 🙂

Also I love that they call Italians “Taliàni” which are meat sausages and it sounds kind a rude to call an Italian like that in Czech

Slovenia is like Slovakia but better because they have everything we have in Slovakia but also have a sea and better government.

Edit: Said by someone from Slovakia.

Respect for using the endonym for Hungary. Too bad about Germany though

I remember ther was once a blogpost by a blogger called “The Vegetarian Traveller” (the blog is offline since a while) who often travelled with the Jamie from the “Great Big Scary World” Blog, as they had been a couple for a long time. Anyway, they flew to the U.K. and she got interrogated by a female Border-Guard. When she was asked where she just came from, she answered honestly with “Slovenia” … But the Border-guard immediatelly said it is a lie, as such country does not exist! So she was accused of inventing the country of Slovenia… would be interesting to read that post again. Perhaps archive org has saved it…

It gets better. The national railway operator in Slovenia is called “Slovenske železnice”, as in Slovenian railways. If you wanted to say Slovak railways in Slovak? It would be “Slovenské železnice” (fortunately it’s called “Železnice Slovenskej Republiky”, as in Railways of the Slovak Republic.

    Mildly interesting:

    ”Sko” means ”shoe” in Swedish.
    ”Fin” means ”nice” in Swedish.

Finsko (Finland) = Nice shoe (literally), or Dress shoe.

It’s ‘Slovenija’ for Slovenia and ‘Slovaška’ for Slovakia. They’re not as similar in name for us in Slovenia.

The beauty of Dánsko is, Dáns is almost spelled like Dans, which means Dance, and Ko is Cow, and two words can become one in Danish, so Dánsko could really be Dancing Cow.

The biggest fuckery when it comes to naming countries in Czech and Slovak will always be.

    Latvia – Lotyšsko

    Lithuania – Litva
