“A forest will be extended for the first time in more than 200 years as plans to plant 120,000 this winter get under way.

After buying Hoarthorn’s Farm in late 2024, Forestry England will plant thousands of trees at the 88-hectare (217 acre) site near Berry Hill
in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire.

Tom Brockington, area manager for Forestry England, said the move is “very significant” with between 1,000 and 1,500 trees being planted per day in the forest’s first expansion since 1817.

A central area of the site will be left as pasture, which will be grazed by cattle during the winter, and it is hoped all 120,000 trees will be in the ground by the end of March. “

This is the best way to attain carbon neutrality! Plant thousands and thousands of trees.

Rewilding efforts in the UK, while still insufficient, have been providing some genuinely impressive results. There are animal populations, Red Kites, Beavers, others that have been extinct in these isles for generations, now returning and flourishing.

Ultimately it’s only part of the fight against environmental decay/climate change, but it *is* a good start that needs more resources funneled into it.

Sounds like an actual eco policy vs concreting over the countryside to house the world

  5. Amazing. We should be doing this everywhere, such a positive move.
