Once every 20 minutes, give-or-take. Seems about right to me tbh.

[Bus gate on Corporation Street in Preston city centre – Lancashire County Council](https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/council/strategies-policies-plans/roads-parking-and-travel/major-transport-schemes/transforming-ringway/corporation-street/)

“Motorists were **caught out** more than 22,000 times by a controversial bus gate in the last six months.”

“That means that drivers have now **fallen foul** of the cameras more than 100,000 times since they were switched on, yielding £3.35m in fines.”

Oh no, motorists are being caught out and falling foul of enforcement cameras because they are ignoring the clear road markings and signage and deliberately using this route as a short cut.

Love how the media always portrays motorists as victims in cases like this.

I misread that as “Motorist” (singular) and thought it was the same car that was fined 22,000 times

The council even gave a grace period where no PCN’s would be issued. Assuming the signage is appropriate then I’m not sure what more they can be expected to do.

I assume the signs are “too small” and “not clear” and stuff like that, even though they’re 10 feet high and use text you can see from space.

I’ve been caught out in Preston centre before and literally had no idea I’d even been in the wrong place until I got the FPN through my letter box. It’s the only such notice I’ve ever had in almost 20 years of driving.

I understand that they’re important and necessary, but there should be questions asked if it’s so difficult to comply that it’s raising unusual amounts of money. It really wasn’t clear where you could and couldn’t go.

It’s funny, isn’t it? In the aerospace/airline/etc industries we have a lot of qualifications and ongoing certifications for everything and yet we recognise that humans make mistakes and seek to account for it. We surveil for patterns of mistakes and when we see them we recognise them as systemic issues and address them. In particular this includes things like carefully managing information and procedures so as to not overwhelm crewmembers, ATC staff, etc, with too much information at once.

In driving we have people who may have done their last test decades ago and since then roads have become more complex, signs have become more numerous (with AFAIK no standard for how dense they can be) and we have added whole new types of sign with some of them not even making it into the Highway Code. Yet, according to (many on) Reddit, every mistake even if part of a huge and consistent pattern is the sole fault of the individual driver and not an indicator of any need for a wider change.

One of the issues I see with Bus Gates is that the various navigation/route-planning tools available to drivers often aren’t aware of them or the changes made to routes surrounding them when the Bus Gate is installed.

In this case for example, mapping a short journey along Corporation Street on Google Maps, the route-planner appears to avoid the bus gate, however it directs the driver to take Heatley Street onto Friargate: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ykUa2pVa4bHreucB8 The problem with this is evident in Street-View – the junction of Heatley St and Friargate is bollarded because Friargate has now been pedestrianised: https://maps.app.goo.gl/EdNFpCPntVo3R7AG7

Next up – people who speed say speed cameras are unfair.

putting some red paint on main road and calling it a “bus only area” is fucking stupid if you view it from maps they didnt alter any surrounding junctions the road just ends as a bus lane

Being a designer for such and having taken a few tickets myself i am always intrigued at the design of bus lanes/gates and behaviours. The blue Bus Only sign on both sides is the enforceable aspect, nothing to do with what’s painted on the road. Unless there’s an edge of bus lane marking and you cross over into a bus lane. For so many Mobists going through every month there has to be a good reason although you cant design out stupid. I think some more physical features are required. There ought to be a continuous route for regular traffic allowing for an edge of carriageway marking across the start of the bus gate.
I’m not in favor of the simpleton approach of No Entry signs With a supplementary plate saying ‘except buses’ This would be a shit design
