Why stop at army? If you work. You should be paid a proper amount.

  2. MickeyBubbles on

We should all be doing a stint in the army or reserves if we are mentally and physically able.

I think it’s going to have to go that way, they could be doing community service also

I heard the UK are doing this and can’t think of a downside tbh. The armed forces get a wider recruitment base, an opportunity to attract those who’d never consider it, an opportunity to prove their worth to those individuals. Skill building of those who join will provide a net benefit to those who move on and enter the workforce. What are the downsides?

No. What is this ridiculous brigading of reddit pretending we can ever in a million years rustle up an army capable of fighting off Russia, especially a bunch of 15 year old.

Ffs. This is such obvious propaganda.

It wouldn’t work unless you build up your defence infrastructure.

I think we should, but with nuance – expand it to public service. I would imagine there are plenty of areas of the public sector that are short staffed.

This, in turn, accommodates those who might object to, or be unfit for, military service.

  8. I think it’s a good idea in practice but would definitely need to see the details hammered out.

A scheme like this could easily turn into an absolute disaster if managed or implemented poorly.

10 years ago I would have been on the fence about this but today I am all in on the idea. Not just for as a gap year thing either. It should be a option for all teenagers, regardless of whether in school or not with some sort of benefit tied in as encouragement. There are lots of roles in the defence forces, not just soldier. Engineering, administration, logistics, catering, maintenance, health care etc. There is even a music school. All should undergo basic (recruit) training which is 12 weeks and then look at their options. I wouldn’t go down the route of mandatory for most but would be a great option for the courts to give young offenders a bit of direction and discipline.

Yes, this would be a great option for TY year or teenagers who aren’t attending school. It teaches responsibility and discipline that young people will carry throughout their lives. On top of that they get a bit of savings going at a young age, offer the ISA accounts for them as well and give them a head start in life.

Nowhere near the capacity to do this properly but in theory its an ok idea. There should be a range of options though.. civil defence, park ranger etc..

Yeah I think so, at least for boys/men.

Curb any opportunity to do something stupid before the brain fully forms around the age of 25

The army already hasn’t got the resources to accept all the recruits who want to join now. The amount of investment never they’d need to run this kind of scheme would be huge.

  14. olibum86 on

No. This is not a good idea imo. The army should be increasing their recruitment age if anything. 26 being the max recruitment age is ridiculously low. The age for the britsh is 36 and 35 for the yanks. Getting a bunch of teenagers in will fill us with numbers but wont add any life experience or professionalism to the force. Other countries did it with an already strong force, and they also had serious teething issues regarding behaviour and standards.

Stop with the half committed solutions, either come up with a plan to have a much larger volunteer army or work out a method of national service/conscription.

Countries are over engineering this because they want to do anything other than offer competitive salaries, because the kind of armies they need would then have wage bills that would blow out public spending, but cutting other services to fund the army would undermine the social contract and make young people less willing to serve. This is the end result of Europe’s economic policy, we can’t cover all our bases.

Teenagers joining the army is like turkeys singing up for Chrsitmas.

Would be a good option to teach some skills for people who dont want to go to uni straight away

  18. Big-Work-2263 on

Absolutely not! We shouldn’t be adding to armies when we have much more constructive ways to employ and train youth

  19. SoloWingPixy88 on

    paid gap years?

Why not just call it 1 year contract and you know just pay them.

WHy are we going around in hoops.

  20. mushy_cactus on

Honestly, yes. The experience they’d get would be amazing and some could very easily get into tech afterwards

  21. Hungry_Bet7216 on

Before they do this they need to ensure the services are properly manned and paid -esp the naval service and air-sea rescue & surveillance. Our geography makes our current defence look childish.
