Interesting reminder of what it could be like at times back in the day

I got pulled in by special branch in Heathrow for nearly 2 hours one morning in the mid 90’s. Two plain clothes lads were waiting as I walked up the ramp from off the plane and gave it a very polite ‘can we have a quick word sir? but the politness went away once I was in their little room. Was all paddy this and paddy that, wanting to know when I was last in Belfast, despite me never having been there at all.
I was only 20 odd and honestly hadn’t a clue what they wanted me for. Turns out I had a similar name to some Ra lad they had on their watchlist. Was very unnerving and made me feel like I’d done something wrong, even though I hadn’t.

This headline and this line at the start confused me a bit “Legendary Irish folk singer Christy Moore was at the centre of a previously unknown diplomatic incident in 200”
As I this was publicised at the time and he has spoken about it since.
This seems to be about a general policy with regards to Irish passengers entering the UK at that time, is that right?
‘According to files released as part of this year’s State Papers, the department highlighted three main areas of concern: Irish passengers being unwittingly photographed at ports and airports, authorities carrying out stops and examinations under the Terrorism Act 2000, and people being asked to fill in personal information on a landing or embarkation card, an act known at the time as “carding”.’

Always found there to be at best an unconscious bias towards Irish at any of the Welsh seaports. I was working in the UK full time between 2009-2015 and was carded almost every time I’d head home on the boat. More often than not a dog would be put into my car too.
Maybe I had a suspicious head on me as a young lad from Tipp driving a beat up Irish reg Corolla, but the same lads would always stop me.
