Check rhe side of door if there is metal switch
Some locks from there are anticlockwise
Pull the handle up first, release, and then turn the lock clockwise.
What door is that? Bathroom?
Sometimes you might have to lift handle a bit until its fully horizontal, then turn the metal lock.
Edit: Also, if it turns 90 degrees, but won’t lock, then it’s broken.
Push this switch up in the lock frame (closing side of door)

That little knob in the lock.
Up = locked
Down = Open
Also sometimes you need to pull a bit more to hear “click” when they actually get locked.
