And also a lot of fighter jets, nukes, soldiers etc.
But politicians have to sell the idea of a weak EU, otherwise “let’s support Ukraine because it’s the only thing between us and ruskies” becomes moot.

This is a bit wrong. I believe it was revealed recently that Canada had something like 10 operational MBTs in the entire country. And I believe they gave 2 to Ukriane

Why does Greece have so many?

I am a big supporter of European Defense….. but these numbers dont even look that good
Other than the US, the top 2 countries are Greece and Turkey, and their tanks are….
1. Pointed at each other, not Russia
2. Often kinda old. Similar to Russia, these 2 nations have large stockpiles of cold war era equipment
After those 3 countries its a pretty big drop off

This chart does not support this claim. Poor Greece having more tanks than the richest countries in Europe is embarrassing.

Tanks in country does not equal functional tanks with a stack of spare parts and the required infrastructure to keep them working.
Tanks are nice but just one part of the very complex ecosystem of war fighting, they are an expendable asset and large quantities are needed. Once You get past the USA, Turkey anad Greece you can see the numbers are pathetic.
Turkey and Greece are full of very old tanks, still useful for a lot of things but old is still old.
This isn´t a win at all.

Those numbers are suspect. The USA has about 2500 operational tanks, the rest are in storage and would need varying amounts of effort to make them operational. They are not assigned to any operational unit.

Yeah, on paper Europe looks stacked, but a lot of that “firepower” is old kit, low readiness and fragmented logistics. Maybe compare ammo stockpiles and maintenance levels next?

I’m sure the Turks hoard stuff from WW2 too. We’re a bit like the Russians that way. I suppose it’s better than nothing, but land doctrine is not based on tank armies.

This chart isn’t saying what you think it does. Not all stockpiles of ‘something’ are created equal and not all NATO countries will actually export their military in anything but token numbers to a fight far from their own borders. In some countries the numbers built up here weren’t done so to counter Russia at all.
It is also an issue of logistics. Getting Mediterranean armor to the Baltics might take weeks or months or years even assuming it could or would be done at all
nic_haflinger on
Poland is buying up to 1000 Korean tanks so these numbers are changing dramatically.
Just because you have tanks doesn’t mean they are being maintained, or are even operational. It also doesn’t mean that the crews are properly trained and that the logistical support exists to keep them supplied in the field. On the bright side whatever shape they are in, they’re probably better than 90% of what the Russians have.

You either have a big army or heal your citizens when they are sick.

The U.S. would be mad, if they knew how to read charts and how many countries there are in the EU/Europe, and how to add these numbers up.
By the way, even the EU has at least 100m higher population (345m < 450m), and economy numbers are very similar to the U.S. and China, in the top 3.
Russia, by the way, is nowhere near the top 3. Russia’s economy is shit. And the population is 146m. The EU has three times this.

Having a lot of tanks isn’t very useful in the post maneuver warfare, just look at Ukraine

Misleading stats for Turkey. Most of their tank arsenals is made up of older M60 and M48 variants from the Cold War. The only “modern” tank that Turkey has available to them right now are the Gen 3 Leopard 2s, which they have around… 350.
They are beginning the mass production of their very first “next gen” Altay variants, which they plan to produce 250 tanks… by 2030…

1. in this age tanks have highly reduced fuctionality due to drones
2. my country is listed 5th, the huge majority of our tanks are based on the very old Russian T-55 design, so totally obsolete

One problem Turkey and Greece have them to fight each other basically cancelling each other out.
Same as saying Korea has the largest army in East Asia, the only problem being its two armies that are hell-bent on destroying each other.

Using every last old, broken, and half-functional tanks are what you do when you treat your troops like disposables. Doing what Russia does shouldn’t be seen as the golden standard.

This is only estimated amount of main battle tanks wtf. But yes the statement is true regardless
