    What does it take to get the message about speeding to some people?

    I’m convinced most people speed now. I always make sure to do the speed limit but always have pricks up me hole tailgating me and when they pass they are flying it.

    Also majority of people seem to be using their phones while driving too. You only notice it when your a pedestrian, I’ve had people drive straight through zebra crossings and red lights while I was trying to cross the road.

    Some people speed on a motorway fast lane

    Some speed *and* lane hop through traffic while doing so.

    Got the fright of my life on the M50 a couple of weeks ago. Someone driving a very powerful motor speeding like mad and lane hopping into spaces which were too small to hop into if you get me.

    Frightening, dangerous, and baffling, not to mention super stupid.

    A lot more of 12 lessons and retake the driving test need to be reintroduced

  5. 90 in an 80? Sure if there isnt much traffic.

    200 in a 100? Mate are you trying to travel through time or something??

    “43% of those tested positive for drugs, predominately cocaine and cannabis.”

    Of those arrested for cannabis, I wonder how many were actually under the influence

    Personally I’m sick of these articles. “Some of the top speeds detected included…”. Not caught, not charged, “detected”. I wonder how many of those drivers actually face any sort of legal consequences.

    My area is constantly on the news with road deaths (I’m in the NW). It’s grim, and the continuing… What could you even call it… Apathy? Acceptance? Fatalism? Is maddening. At least four people known to my family have died in the last 24 months, some more distant than others, and the devastation is unreal.

    Particularly infuriating then seeing the mad amount of speeding on the roads, people not taking corners correctly, an infuriating lack of indicators, car drivers and lorry drivers driving while their eyes are on their phones, loose attitudes to drink and drug driving, and more.

    I lived abroad in a really hectic city until recently but due to traffic, the chaos was always somewhat mitigated by how slow cars were going. Here, the consequences are huge.

    No point to be made really other than how fucking sad and frustrating it is.

  9. I quite like the method the use in Finland for speeding tickets. It’s not a fixed fine, it’s a percentage of your net income and the severity of the infraction. Fixed price penalties are basically the fee you pay to go fast. If the ticket is 50 quid and you earn a lot, its not going to hurt that much.

    I could be wrong on the exact calculation but for Finland, the severity of the speeding violation is determined by a multiplier based on how much over the speed limit the driver was going. Net Monthly income divided by 60 give you the daily rate you would have to pay. For example:

    * 1–15 km/h over the limit: x12 (~ 20% of net monthly income)
    * 16–25 km/h over the limit: x22 (~ 30% of net monthly income)
    * 26–35 km/h over the limit: x32 (~ 50% of net monthly income)
    * 36 km/h or more over the limit: x42 (~ 67% of net monthly income)

    For instance, a driver earning €3,000 per month caught speeding 20 km/h over the limit (x22) would be fined approximately €1000. Earning €5,000 per month and same infraction would be €1,800.

    As a driver I don’t like what it would cost if I got caught but it would be a pretty strong deterrent to get a ticket

    Calculator is here if you want to try it our for yourself. [https://poliisi.fi/en/fine-counter](https://poliisi.fi/en/fine-counter)

  10. Look 207km/hr is taking the piss, but I’d say a good percentage of that 4600 is people caught by the speed vans right at the exact spot where the speed limit changes. Theres one nearly every day where the m7 turns into the n7 and the speed limit changes from 120 to 100, like right at the exact spot. There’s no way in hell that’s in the interest of public safety, it’s only to keep the numbers up for GoSafe, the private company who suction millions from AGS every year.
