      >Latvian racism is kinda widespread online where everyone is anonymous. Especially in topics rereading the alleged racist motivated killing of the Ghanaian student Ahyia Nana Agyei. But not only online a significant part of the country seems to be backwards ([https://www.mfa.gov.lv/en/article/european-commission-against-racism-and-intolerance-urges-latvia-strengthen-protection-against-discrimination-hate-crimes-and-vulnerable-communities](https://www.mfa.gov.lv/en/article/european-commission-against-racism-and-intolerance-urges-latvia-strengthen-protection-against-discrimination-hate-crimes-and-vulnerable-communities))

I’m not excusing or justifying the death of that man because we all have the same dignity, we all must receive the same respect and treatment regardless of our ethnicity. There is no room for racism.

      >A lot of the times comments read “Latvia for Latvians” or “This is not Africa. My question to these people is why do you come to western Europe? For example my country the Netherlands. Isn’t this exactly the same? People moving from a generally poorer area to an economically more advanced society. (or let’s just say more advanced society in general). We don’t share the same values.

You do share the same values with Latvians though (for the most part).

Both societies (Latvia and the Netherlands) have a historical Christian background and even if nowadays many people are atheists/agnostics/irreligious they still have many values that came from Christianity.

A Latvian person automatically integrates in the Netherlands and even if you say the Netherlands is more pro LGBT, etc you need to remember there are conservative and Christian Dutch people who don’t agree with LGBT, abortion, etc.

A person from Africa or the Middle East in most cases struggles a lot more to integrate in the West in case they ever manage to integrate because they come from societies that are completely different to what you see in the West. Their mentality is completely different, even what they believe is moral is different.

THOSE are the ones who don’t share the same values with you.

      >Maybe we once did but the Netherlands is in majority secular and has strong lgbtqia+ rights. Something that is the opposite of Latvia. This is not compatible with each other. So why do you move here but don’t want others to move to your country. And does it matter if someone movies into Latvia from Europe vs Africa if so why does that matter?

And this is why in 2100 more than 20% of the population in the Netherlands will be Muslim.

    3. Did you know? Other countries have internet too, so just because you can speak to people online doesn’t mean they are going to your country. Ridicilous of you to preach about racism (in a case where family likely is not able to accept that the guy commited suicide) when you have problems even with people of same race existing on the same continent.

    4. OP, you’ve pinpointed a very real and painful tension. The irony you’ve noticed about migration is just the tip of the iceberg; there is a much deeper layer to this struggle with ‘the other’ in our society.

I am a local Russian-speaker, and my family’s roots in this land go back many centuries—well before the 19th century. Despite having such deep, multi-generational history here, I still frequently encounter the ‘suitcase-station-Russia’ rhetoric. It’s a sad reality: if a society hasn’t yet fully processed how to coexist with its own historical minorities who have called this place home for hundreds of years, it’s unfortunately not surprising that it reacts so defensively toward newcomers from completely different cultures.

The ‘Latvia for Latvians’ sentiment often excludes even those of us who have no other home and never have. It shows how much work still needs to be done on social cohesion and defining what a modern Latvian identity looks like in 2026. Until we can find common ground with the people who have lived here for centuries, diversity will continue to be seen as a threat rather than a reality to be managed.

You can keep your african doctors/engineers to yourself, also you can pretend that mental illness is something everyone should celebrate and show publicly.
I personally will never live by those modern western society pretend rules to just follow some rotten narrative. I see what I see and I think what I think rather than what everyone else wants me to see and think.

If I recognize that black uneducated African who sits all day on the street and sells drugs and receive benefits is burden to society and should be forcibly sent back home then that doesn’t make me a racist, but that makes me someone who sees reality and doesn’t pretend to imaginary nonsense.

From my friends circle no person who works in NL thinks different from me regarding this. They just work in NL just because you have better economy, so for financial gain rather than because of any narrative etc.

Internal migration is ok. I don’t understand what you’re talking about…if the Dutch come to Latvia, that’s completely ok.
Yes, we, like many Eastern European countries, are less tolerant because our entire history is one of wars and occupations by various empires. Unlike the Netherlands, which plundered other countries and was one of the major powers that traded slaves.
Who are you ashamed of your history and now trying to embarrass us? We have nothing to be ashamed of. We were slaves ourselves and now just try to hold our land.
