L’Europa è così indietro rispetto agli Stati Uniti in termini di infrastrutture digitali che ha “perso Internet”, ha avvertito un importante garante informatico europeo.
Miguel De Bruycker, direttore del Center for Cybersecurity Belgium (CCB), ha dichiarato al Financial Times che è “al momento impossibile” archiviare completamente i dati in Europa perché le aziende statunitensi dominano l’infrastruttura digitale.
“Abbiamo perso l’intero cloud. Abbiamo perso Internet, siamo onesti”, ha detto De Bruycker. “Se voglio che le mie informazioni restino al 100% nell’UE… continuate a sognare”, ha aggiunto. “Stai fissando un obiettivo che non è realistico.”
Il funzionario belga ha avvertito che l’Europa difese informatiche dipendeva dalla cooperazione delle aziende private, la maggior parte delle quali americane. “Nel cyberspazio tutto è commerciale. Tutto è di proprietà privata”, ha affermato.

L’Europa deve sviluppare le proprie capacità per rafforzare l’innovazione e la sicurezza, ha affermato De Bruycker, aggiungendo che leggi come l’AI Act dell’UE, che regola lo sviluppo della tecnologia in rapido sviluppo, stanno “bloccando” l’innovazione.
Ha suggerito che i governi dell’UE dovrebbero sostenere le iniziative private per costruire scala in settori come il cloud computing o le tecnologie di identificazione digitale.

Most datacenters in Europe are Azure / AWS infrastructure. Sure, there is OVH as one of the only actual alternatives, but migrating will be costly and I’m not even sure it is actually possible due to the sheer scale the traditional centers have
And now with AI companies reserving compute leading to exploding hardware prices we’re even more priced out.
I’m aware of multiple big projects actually doing the migration thing to European providers, so the will is there, just needs a tipping point and lots of juicy Euro investments

As long as capital markets in the EU remain fractured and the process of raising money is overly burdensome, it will remain more attractive for promising European (tech) companies to move overseas.
Not only is raising funds in the US a lot easier, the amounts private investors are willing to invest are a lot higher.
This was also outlined in the Draghi report, and Europe should act on this point asap.
