Surely a lot of countries are both? Britain is marked green but people call it Holland all the time

  2. Intelligent_Pass2953 on

Hmmmm a lot of people in Bulgaria call it Holland, we know its wrong, but its kind of a historic error, yet to be fixed.

  3. GabettiXCV on

Paesi Bassi is the official name in Italian, but in spoken language people say Olanda 95% of the time.

  4. GolotasDisciple on

    Not really correct, surely?

While it’s technically wrong, most Europeans use “Holland” and “Netherlands” interchangeably. It does annoy Dutch people, but at this point it’s basically a general norm not some kind of paradox that happens on particular line on the map.

  5. Common_Pirate_8005 on

In most countries people say both, but the correct one is Netherlands, unless you are specifically reffering to the part of Netherlands called Holland.

Romania has the “tarile de jos” term but 90% of people will use Holland/Olanda.

  7. --Raskolnikov-- on

Nobody says “Tarile de jos” in Romania, although that’s the official name

  8. Vaestmannaeyjar on

You only included input in French for Belgium, you’re going to start a war.

  9. AibofobicRacecar6996 on

Who in Romania calls Olanda “Tarile de Jos”? You see it in the graphics of a football game, but the average person calls it Olanda.

We call it Holland in Britain I’ve never heard anybody call it the Netherlands in conversation.

I’m from Serbia but I call NL exclusively ‘Nizozemska’. I say ‘Holandija’ when I’m referring to the historical province.

I would say that Danes know its called Nederlandene; but most people would just say Holland, its faster to say and we know what we mean. No one knows the other Netherland provinces.

  13. TijsZonderH on

Im convinced this post was created to trigger the majority of Belgians, who in fact, speak Dutch.

And Japan “Oranda” and Chinese “Hélán” as well. And Indonesian Belanda.

  15. juanchospain on

In all the world people usually call it Holland though isn’t correct

I think there are many more countries where the official term is “Netherlands” but the general public says “Holland”. For exemple in Germany and to a lesser extent in France.

“Niderlandy” is official name in Russia. “Gollandia” is used more often.

  18. Radi1229 on

In Germany, almost everyone calls in Holland. Almost no one says “Niederlande”

An Isiltir, sounds bad ass to me. Like Lord of the Rings or something. It’s going to be my new way of saying where I’m from.

  20. In Spain “Holanda” is the most common name, “Países bajos” can be used but it’s less common.

  21. widling1 on

My understanding is that Holland is only North and South Holland (2 out of 12 provinces).

  22. Available-Sun6124 on

Here in Finland we use both Alankomaat (Netherlands) and Hollanti (Holland).

  23. _Holanda_ is used here a lot. Even in more serious contexts (say a football radio broadcast for example).

  24. Why_Are_Moths_Dusty on

It’s Yr Iseldiroedd in Welsh. Which just means The Lowlands.

  25. Chart immediately invalidated by claiming the French name as the name used in Belgium. We have two official languages (well, technically three) so no single name for The Netherlands.

  26. PozitronCZ on

In Czechia we also colloquially call the Netherlands Holland (and the UK England and UK citizens the Englishmen).

  27. NickMeAnotherTime on

As a Romanian I can definitely and with utmost certainty tell you that we call it “Olanda”. I know that the correct way is “Țările de Jos”, but I can tell you 100% that unless you are an academic or a football commentator you never call it anything else than Olanda.

  28. Fehervari on

The alternative in Hungarian is Németalföld, which translates to ‘German Low Lands’. Simply ‘Alföld’ is not available since we already use that for our own plains (Great and Small Hungarian Plains).

I’m sure most Dutch prefer being collectively called Holland instead of German.

  29. sammclane on

Thats just wrong. In switzerland we call it Holland 99% of the time. Italy uses Olanda as well. And I guess almost every other country uses that

  30. Moosplauze on

I’m from Germany and all people I know call the Netherlands Holland aswell. I know it’s not the correct term, but that’s what everyone says. Isn’t it also what all football fans from the Netherlands chant? Hup, Holland, Hup. Never heard them refer to their nation as Netherlands.

  31. ironshrek on

In Polish the official name is Królestwo Niderlandów (Kingdom of Netherlands)but people still call it Holland in every day use, just like they call the UK Anglia (England)
