Fidesz held a congress today and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni sent a short video message ([as did other foreign politicians](https://telex.hu/belfold/2026/01/10/fidesz-kongresszus-kulfoldi-politikusok) like Milei, Vučić, Weidel, Le Pen, Netanyahu, etc.). Here’s what [she said](https://youtu.be/g4yTcMlnOE4?t=9958):

    >Dear friends from Fidesz! It’s a great pleasure for me to bring my greetings to all of you and to my very good friend Viktor Orbán. Together we fight many battles. Most of the time we agree, at times we may disagree, but we know how to understand each other, because we are united by higher values: our friendship, our love for our peoples and the deep bond between our nations united by a shared heritage and by the three colours of our beautiful flags. Together we stand for a Europe that respects national sovereignty, is proud of its cultural and religious roots and its identity, strong in protecting its borders and its security, courageous in supporting families as the fundamental cell of our societies, and pragmatic in defending our producers from bureaucratic overregulations and ideological green follies. Across our continent these values are prevailing and I sincerely hope, dear Viktor and dear friends, that they will continue to prevail in Hungary as well. God bless you all.

What’s the deal here? I thought the EU was worried that Orbán winning the election would harm Europe’s security and Ukraine and Meloni was pro-Ukraine. What gives?

Italy should not be looked to as a beacon of hope in these times. The history shows us enough to know.

    Why are people surprised?

Domestically, Meloni is just as bad as Orban, with the difference that she has not succeeded to capture the courts (yet).

People just care about her not being pro Russia like Orban?

im a big Meloni fan, what an embarrassing thing to watch. Especially as she says she stands for things that orban clearly does not. they have been on opposite sides on EU issues a lot.

well you know what they say, if you cant say anything bad about your “side” then you’re brainwashed

Italians never seem to know what side they are on haha

Lol, I was downvoted for calling Meloni a fascist.

If it walks like a duck…

I’m honestly surprised how much space she gets on European medias.

She’s nobody. She never answer queations, she just send pre-filmed videos where she just talks about what’s she’s interested.
