The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, defended this Monday that the European Union must follow an equal relationship with the United States, not «vassalage» of the Europeans before the administration that he now heads Donald Trump.

Sánchez showed his conviction of the benefits of this pro-Atlanticism in the press conference he offered with his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after the meeting that both held at the Moncloa Palace (presidential headquarters) and in which the analysis of the current geopolitical situation has been one of its axes.

In addition to issues such as Ukraine and Venezuela, both heads of government addressed Trump’s aspirations for Greenland, after the president of the United States affirmed his determination to control this territory«by hook or by crook».

The head of the Spanish Executive recalled that Madrid signed a declaration last week together with other European countries on this matter and was convinced that security in the Arctic can be guaranteed.

In his opinion, the fundamental thing is to be aware that collective security is not contradictory to the security of a country like the United States.

«We are a pro-Atlantic Government that defends the validity and vigor of the Atlantic Alliance, but this relationship does not admit inequalities and it is important to work together with respect and taking into account the communion of values and principles of all Western countries», he added before insisting on his idea that there cannot be a relationship of «vassalage», but as equals.

The defense of these values believes that it should be applied both to the aspirations of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, or «in the face of any other issue that has to do with the violation of International Law», in reference to Trump’s claims with Greenland.

For his part, Mitsotakis pointed out that the future of Greenland is up to this territory and Denmark to decide, and that the European Union must be on the front line in defending the territory of all its states.

But he was convinced that solutions can be found on security issues in the Arctic for mutual benefit for both sides of the Atlantic, and, in light of this, he appealed for a united European Union.

Regarding the bilateral relationship between Spain and Greece, the two heads of Government highlighted the good moment they are going through and the importance of joint collaboration in the face of common interests on the European agenda.

Thus, they referred specifically to the negotiation of the next EU budgetary framework, with special relevance for the two countries regarding what is decided to allocate to the Common Agricultural Policy,or compliance with the migration pact

Sánchez, who also highlighted the importance of the final agreement that the EU has reached with Mercosur, agreed with his Greek counterpart on the need to maintain support for Ukraine and seek definitive peace in the Middle East. (January 12)

  2. Get a military then. Reality is they won’t respect you until you can defend yourself.

Sure. But it’s quite difficult of you have the enemy military bases into your country.

Says the one who wants to invest nothing in the military? He should spearhead the creation of a EU army and colaborate with the UK to integrate it.

If the US can just go in and deploy some troops at Fox News prime time and take over Greenland and the EU doesn’t do nothing except voicing their protest, it is not a relationship of equals.

In the last 40 years or so the US mainly determines how the World is running and they now have determined that this is the way it runs today.

And we can either do stuff and act as equals or tuck our tail between our legs and be treated as minors. I don’t like it either but the reality is that this is how it is today and voicing our protest will not change it.

Facts will. Actions will. Showing strength will. Basically the same language Putin and Xi speak and understand.

Cool, why then oppose the military spending increese? 1,2 % of GDP is not enough to secure any real strategic autonomy. It is a pointless statement, if they are not willing to do their part in colective defence.

Then the EU should act like they seriously want to become an equal one day — ain’t gonna happen anytime soon — and of course take steps to make it happen. Taking military power seriously and coordinating efforts and MUCH bigger budgets would be a nice start. Oh, and stop being so nice and deferential.

Maybe Sanchez should find a dictionary and find out what vassalage means.

And actually speak up more and put himself on the stage if he wants change.

Three crucial steps to confront the US:

    1. Stronger union, time to put aside artificial national differences and become what we were always supposed to become, we can be one big fist ready to deliver a blow to Putin, Trump and Climate Change, or 27 small fingers that can just deliver 27 small pokes.

    2. A European firewall within which only European owned companies can operate in accordance with European values. European google, European Youtube, one European mobile phone, one European Social media website, European AI (or no AI allowed) and so on. Strictly no more American and Russian websites, the only way to eradicate the propaganda and bots is to have no room for the cancer to spawn let alone grow, no foreign websites period unless they sell to European company and follow all European laws.

    3. Be confident. All of us need to take a deep breath and remember that we were always the true sole Shining City on a Hill, the only location anywhere on earth where you can be truly free, free from poverty thanks to our belief in social programs and workplace protections, free from disease thanks to our belief in healthcare, free from ignorance thanks to our belief in education, free from stress and hatred thanks to our robust free speech protections which balance the fine line of free speech and hatred and misinformation. True freedom is found in the place where everyone wants to move to and replicate, and thats the European Union.

Lots of unflaired commenters, like in every single article that mentions Sanchez and Trump. I wonder why…

Without a unified EU military that can compete with the US or China, Europe will always sit in the back of the room. Period.

  13. _Razeft_ on

he is right, is time for europe to move on, and no matter who would be the next usa president we need to stop to be their vassals, our politics need to understand this more that everything.

    and you know, he’s right.

Let’s tell that to Meloni, Orban, Tusk, Merz, VDL, …

How about no? Let’s exclude the failed states of America.

They don’t even believe in the moon landing. To the U.S., facts, agreements and laws are meaningless. It’s not up to the EU to do anything.

thats not how it works. we can only have an equal relationship if there is equal strength
