    Its a range war just as it was in the days of battleships. 

    The range you can get with a fibre optic drone is important, if yours is higher, you can knock out the enemy drone operators whilst they struggle to return. Thats asymetric warfare using a conventional method of pushing technology further.  The Royal Navy was largely built around a range advantage and speed, the archers before them were the exact same idea. 

    Range can be increased with certain little known techniques, by increasing lift efficiency larger spools are possible, as is more battery and payload. 

    I’m not going to mention how it can be done, other than that winged fibre optic drones exist, but suffer in that we may want slow flight performance with efficient lift, whilst not being too easily spotted.
