Note that Brennan’s bread qualifies as “ultra processed”, as it’s a very broad definition.

Hopefully we can go back to real food like the mainland. I ate so well when I was over in Italy, it actually fixed up a ton of stomach and skin issues I’d been having for a small while. Hard to cut out the crap in Ireland.

Is pasta processed food?

The Mediterranean diet is not a fiction by middle class travel writers and cooks. It’s proper healthy food.
Certainly a north/south difference with what we ingest

It’s all the chicken fillet rolls and spice bags.

Well seeing as cheese, Weetabix, all cereals, microwave popcorn, anything fizzy, preserved meats and fruit drinks and yogurts. So yeah of course this is expected results.
It’s like, people tend to eat fresh food where it actually grows you know!
But we do have a problem of eating quick and processed meals.
I’ve lived in Belgium and Sweden, and I feel our fresh food Isles are way smaller.

What counts as ultra processed food? Does something like Cheese or butter qualify?
Edit: I found a source. Ultra processed is something that contains additives that wouldn’t normally be found in a kitchen such as chemical preservatives. [https://publichealth.jhu.edu/2025/what-are-ultra-processed-foods](https://publichealth.jhu.edu/2025/what-are-ultra-processed-foods) Butter and cheese don’t qualify it seems but I guess some margarines could.

Go to a market in a Mediterranean country and you will see actually fresh appetising food that you would want to eat.

Well yeah are we surprised by that? Chips, curry half in half, take aways (the recovery when hanging), alcohol, soda / fizzy drinks, crisps and no fruit in the average Irish diet. Surprised it’s not 50% given that a lot of guys I know that can’t cook

I think part of this is that the perception of what healthy food is has changed dramatically. Things like high protein yogurts and protein bars would be ultra processed

This map looks to be completely made up. This study seems to have a pretty good methodology https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8921104/ tldr: Ireland are fairly middle of the pack in terms of % of diet coming from UPFs, Italy and Estonia best, and UK and Sweden worst.

This whole processed foods needs clearing up. Yogurt is an ultra processed food. The whole thing is meaningless and misleading

All that fine land we have and we’re getting an American appetite for convenience. Convenience in the sense of saving cooking time but reducing our life spans.

Look at what the supermarkets in France, Spain or Italy serve. Then see what fills up all the tescos across the island. Night and day difference. Their governments simply wouldn’t put up with the garbage our supermarkets are selling yet we have to…

I never understood why the Irish don’t eat more fish. It’s hard to even find a fishmonger and I think that’s amazing

The whole “ultraprocessed” fad is largely un-scientific nonsense.
A lot of foods that qualify as ultra-processed is unhealthy, but not because it qualifies as ultra-processed.
