> “Public spending has increased from €67 billion from just before the pandemic to €118 billion for next year – a 75 per cent increase in just seven years.
Crazy
When the golden goose that is corporate windfall tax suffers from a global economic crisis or sees a significant reduction due to further nationalistic scrutiny from the MAGA administration… we are fucked.
FF and FG know that they are in power as long as both parties are willing to be a coalition and are spending to get themselves elected and support their backers.
Even if SF had won every single seat it went for in the last election they couldn’t have won a majority without a coalition and that realistically would have had to be with FF or FG.
Unless Labour or one of the other parties manage to expand their influence, we are stuck with FF and FG for a generation.
>The Department estimates that ‘excess’ corporation tax receipts amount to around €18 billion – these are revenues that are not linked to the domestic economy and could prove transient. This implies an underlying deficit of over €13 billion next year.
>“Part of the problem lies in the ‘in-year drift’ – multiple fiscal events over the course of the year. Another part of the problem is the ‘monetise every problem’ approach – rather than address the underlying structural problem, line Departments and Ministers need a renewed consciousness that taxpayer’s money is funding spending. It is a finite source and not a solution for every problem. ”
Seems like fairly sound advice.
We have especially sewn this issue with the department of health.
Where the answer to everything seems to throw a few more billion a year into the black hole, woth very little change in waiting lists etc.
After the 2008 crash there was a lot of finger pointing and I told you so to go around. This feels the same, lots of solid indicators blatantly ignored and an excuse for everything. People trying to find other ways to say “soft landing” this time.
The fact was that in the 2007 general election, no party manifesto was calling for less spending and a more cautious approach. Quite the opposite. In 2024 it was the same.
We are such a short termist nation, for whatever reason.
The main issue is that everyone who wants more spending are the ppl who go don’t pay any tax. It’s always someone else’s money that needs to be spent.
If u look at last years budget it cost c7.5b to stand still. An incredible
Amount of money and everyone is manning about 500m given in a vat deduction to keep low paying people in jobs
Of course not. The solution to every problem is sincere honest action to solve every problem PERMANENTLY.
Root cause analysis and dealing with itnsolves the problem.
Maybe the problems benefit them? A government of Landlords are benefitting from soaring rental prices directly benefitting them. They have no interest in creating more homes as it will reduce the demand for renting and it is bad for their personal business.
