Keep this is mind when discussing Lauder, an old pal and financial funder to Trump, who is owed many favors:

1996: According to the New York Times, A grand jury was empanelled to restigate Ron Lauder in connection with at least $1 million in bribes to Ukrainian officials for TV rights there. The payments examined took place in
1996. Vadim Rabinovitch was part of the investigation, and this was less than a year after Rabinovich attended an organized crime meeting in Tel Aviv, Israel, headed by Ukrainian (then Russian territory) mafia boss Semion Mogilevich.

This summit meeting was held on October 10th through 19th, 1995. Participants included Sergei Mikhailov, Viktor Averin, Boris Birshtein, Vadim Rabinovich, Leonid Bilounov, and Arnold Tamm.

The subjects met in Boris Burstein’s office, and the Diamond Center of Tel Aviv, the subject of the meeting, was the sharing of interest in Ukraine.

A snip: “Lauder’s bid to gain the television license in Ukraine began in 1995. That year, he met in New York with Oleksandr Volkov, a top adviser to Ukraine President Leonid D. Kuchma, to discuss business opportunities.

The initial meetings between Mr. Lauder and his representatives and Mr. Volkov were not promising. “Volkov basically told me to go to hell,” Central European Media’s director of development, Linda Jensen, reported in an internal memorandum in December 1995.

She said in the memo that Mr. Volkov had told her that “C.M.E. doesn’t stand a chance” in the quest for the license that would allow the company to expand its operations.

Mr. Volkov suggested that Mr. Lauder team up with a new Ukrainian television broadcasting company, Studio 1 + 1, in Kiev, and he did. The principal owners were Vadim Rabinovich and Boris Fuchsmann, well known around Kiev for their influence and wealth.

“Ronald Lauder, founder of CME, left an executive position at the Estée Lauder cosmetics company in 1983 and took a foreign affairs position at the Pentagon. Later he was appointed ambassador to Austria, which gave him the chance to develop personal contacts and practical experience in Europe. The post also augmented his appreciation for his Eastern European heritage: his parents had come to the United States from Nazi-controlled Hungary in the 1930s. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in the early 1990s, Lauder’s professional experience and personal heritage led him to pursue business opportunities in the countries newly liberated from Communist control. He teamed up with Mark Palmer, a former ambassador to Hungary, and founded Central European Development Corporation in 1991. The two focused on television broadcasting as an area with particular potential for growth. They believed that consumer spending was likely to continue growing in Eastern European countries and would soon generate a boom in the demand for television advertising space. Over the next few years, they explored the possibilities for partnerships in Eastern Europe and began amassing technical and programming capabilities.”
