The international Charlemagne Prize, the «Karlpreis», will go to former ECB President Mario Draghi in 2026 for his «great» work for European unity. This was announced by the organization of the prize being awarded in Aachen.
In the motivation for recognizing Draghi, they recall «whatever it takes!», the «courageous» formula that saved the euro in the midst of crisis. «This decision comes at a time when Europe has many enemies, perhaps more enemies than ever, both inside and outside» – commented the former premeir in a video message broadcast during the announcement. «To preserve the European Union, Europeans must remain more united than ever», he explained. «We must overcome our self-imposed weaknesses. And we need to get stronger: militarily, economically and politically», he added.
«Like no other, Mario Draghi is synonymous with strengthening Europe’s economy, and his 2024 ‘Draghi Report,’ named after him, represents the necessary strategy to ensure competitiveness, growth, and stability in the European Union», reads the citation published on the Award website. «In appreciation of an exceptional work in the service of the EU and in recognition of its historical merits for the preservation, consolidation and development of the European Economic and Monetary Union as a central and indispensable element of integration, the Governing Council of the Aachen International Charlemagne Prize Award Society will honour in 2026 the former President of the European Central Bank and former President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic, prof.Mario Draghi».
«In times of great uncertainty and challenges – he continues – we need mediators, visionaries and strategic thinkers who have the ability to clearly point out concrete paths to follow, as well as courageous decision makers and implementers! Prominent figures who, at crucial historical moments when a centuries-old project risks failure, take responsibility, even if the consensus of public opinion and much of the political class is far from certain», it still reads. «About a decade and a half ago, the European Union was already facing a similar situation, and Mario Draghi took responsibility! «Whatever it takes!»
These three words represent not only the rescue of the euro, but also an attitude of courage and willingness to take risks for European beliefs. And even today Draghi is one of the leading figures who once again point the way for the Union towards greater competitiveness, more solidarity, more Europe». The International Charlemagne Prize in Aachen, first awarded in 1950, is the oldest and most renowned award given to individuals or institutions for their services to Europe and European unity.
Around 15-20% of Draghi’s reforms have already been implemented and more is on the way. He has called for a pragmatic federalism.
Still not as many enemies as during WW2.
His statements and some initiatives have been unmissible…
He is truly a man for Europe
>Charlemagne Prize 2026 will go to Mario Draghi for his great work toward European unification
Actually, that’s a prize the Orange buffoon deserves for next year
If Europe were a federal system with a president, it should be him.
He’s the best European politician.
Marione. We don’t deserve you.
Mario Draghi is good people
”Respect to Draghi for the prize, but is this really the unification we need? This is the vision of a great bureaucrat who tried to unite Europe at the tables of banks and big industries, ignoring those who live and work every day in Italy, France, or Germany.
The failure of the ‘Bureaucratic Model’:
For years, the system aimed for competitiveness by keeping wages low for Europeans (especially in Italy) to favor exports. The result? Prices rose, mortgages skyrocketed, and families fell into poverty, while banks remained untouched. This is a union made of cold numbers, not people. It’s an ‘industrial machine’ that crushed the common worker.
Our Idea: A Federation of Peoples, not Technicians
We don’t need programs made by technocrats for the next 6 months. We need a Federation with a 20-year vision that protects the common citizen:
Real Sovereignty: Instead of appointed bureaucrats, we need a Federal President elected by the citizens.
Protection for the People: Unification must not happen through wage cuts, but through a Single Engine that protects purchasing power and guarantees the same rights for a worker in Bucharest as for one in Paris.
From the bottom up: We need a common defense and economy to stop being subjects of global giants (USA/China), but this must serve the people, not just the balance sheets of big corporations.
Draghi’s Europe is a giant post office; our idea is a common home where the economy serves the citizens, not the other way around. Less bureaucracy, more Federation of Peoples.”
From what I read about him he could be great president of European Federation /cope
a giant among dwarves
Write great econ white paper on why Europe needs to get it together, win stupid prizes (while we ignore you).
In Ancient Rome, in times of emergency the Senate could elect a “dictator”, to have full and absolute powers for six months, unhampered by bureaucracy.
I’m just saying.
Well deserved. I disagree on a ton of stuff, but the earnest efforts by him towards a stronger Europe could hardly be missed.
Trump will now want his prize
Time to go to the pope for that Coronation 😂
