You can’t appease bullies. They’ll just come back for more.

To think soft power will do the job with this Trump administration at this point in time, is beyond naive.

Keir, it’s time to stop placing feet in each camp. It’s time to be a PM and fight for the people. The US is no longer an ally.

Why are we putting up with this? Trump is a bully and a thug, and he’ll keep punishing you if you do nothing.

We’re not at that stage yet on appeasing. This is in retaliation to US tariffs on the UK.
Tariffs hurt the home country more than the country you apply them on.
What the UK can do is push back with regulations, while lowering tariffs.
We can also move the chess pieces behind the scene. Less F35s, put on hold other US service purchases.
Obviously if the US makes a move vs Greenland, or escalate more, then the UK will reconsider.

Keir Starmer should have learned that you can’t deal with Trump by backing down.

I mean, tariffs are stupid to begin with, _an eye for an eye_ is stupid, but given that Trump doesn’t really care for anything and doesn’t abide by any rulebook, retaliatory tariffs might be as good as anything else. The important part is that whatever the European nations do, they do it together. Way to undermine all of that, Keir. Grow a spine, for fuck sake.

Not surprising !!
Forget about retaliatory tariffs against US , on the contrary UK is increasingly buying US debt .
UK is increasing its share in US treasury bonds meanwhile other countries are lowering their share .

Getting involved in a tariff war is stupid, especially if this ends up as another bluff. It only hurts everyday people on both sides of the Atlantic.
That being said, I hope Starmer and co are actually prepared for the worst case scenario. We must not bow down if they move on Greenland.

1: Getting into a tariff war & making things more expensive for British citizens is stupid and 2: Why do people expect the UK to be the sacrificial lamb in the tariff war? The EU has ruled out tariffs for now too

Further proof that Brexit was a mistake. The UK is in a much more vulnerable position now than they would have been as a part of a bloc.
Basically Starmer is going into a holding pattern, while he works out what to do with allies.
It’s a normal press conference event. Not a major change in alliances press event.

This is the right approach. People criticise Trump for taxing his own citizens with tariffs, and I’m glad Starmer isn’t shooting himself in the foot too. We must work with allies to de-escalate this potential conflict before it happens, rather than escalating it in a game of tit-for-tat

It’s appears that despite Trumps infamous tariff spree last year people still have no idea how they work. Its a tax that WE pay for goods from America, with the intention of forcing companies to turn to domestic sources instead, except we have no domestic capacity to do so. Retaliatory tariffs would hurt the UK far more than it would the US.

Tbh it makes sense, tariffs impact domestic consumers most, not the country they imposed on.

Well they’re putting taxes on themselves so retaliation would be putting taxes on ourselves, if you want to hit them on the wallet there are better ways. As for the consumers they can start avoiding US products even if they don’t cost more.

Never rule out anything!!! Don’t let your opponent know what you’re thinking
British politicians of all persuasions can’t negotiate for toffee. With their public red lines and ruling things in or out it basically negates your space and leverage in negotiations. You have to leave some doubt and uncertainty in your opponents mind.

He said nothing of the sort. He said a trade war would be bad for everyone and he wanted to avoid it, and did not answer the retaliation question. If the new tariffs go ahead, domestic pressure will force him to retaliate.
