It might be short-sighted or naive of me but I’m not even that fussed. All countries spy, China spies now out of their current embassy, as do we over there.
Frankly, they’re not openly trying to push for a complete regime change here unlike our ‘special’ ally and their tech barons, who I honestly believe to be a far bigger danger to us and Europe.

From Chaos to this, it’s time to accept that this government is catastrophically unsuited to the current world order.
Insane.

Plenty of fat brown envelopes passed around London for that to happen.

It was inevitable. I cannot honestly believe that MI5 has not set up countermeasures in place.
At this point I am more worried about the US presence in the UK, but that’s another story…

Honestly, even if this is completely organic to current events, I’m very happy that this has been done in spite of the US’s actions recently. Especially funny as Mike Johnson’s in town.

So now all their spies will be in one place rather than spread out across several buildings in London. Struggling to see what the big deal is here.

I sure hope Labour told China to ease off the endless hacking of British-based companies if they want to have this super spy-hub/embassy in London.

If the UK was smart they would put a bug in every pot plant and light switch in the place.

Trump’s going to have a right bee in his bonnet about this
The real question is why was China allowed to buy the site in the first place …

Oh no, now we’ll know exactly where all their spies will be housed and where all the comms gear will be placed. That’ll make things so much harder for MI5 and MI6 that will, having an easily locatable central hub to deal with. And when they move the gear all in, I’m sure that the workmen involved will not all have an extra few quid in readies down the local pub that weekend either.
I hope someone at GCHQ remembers to send Beijing a Thank You card for making this as easy as possible for us.

Hopefully this brings some epic Chinese restaurants to the area!

tbh i think i’d welcome the chinese embassy and close down the american one right now.

It’s funny how the people against the embassy love talking about China being a global threat to democracy whilst being completely silent on our allies, USA and Israel going on a war path unchecked throughout the world and staging coups to destabilise countries to steal their resources.
Whilst if we’re talking spying/hacking, you have as much to fear if not more from both countries than China if you don’t obey them.
In the end, make no mistake every country is spying/hacking each other. A big building isn’t exactly the crux of it all

We should be looking to be critically neutral with China and build strong trading relationships after America has yet again shown its true colours. I expect every state to spy on each other but this is China not Russia – I don’t see them as a direct threat
Left_Tie1390 on
It’s unfortunate that Trump has made closer cooperation with China even more necessary, given China’s role in pushing anti-Western propaganda via TikTok, its suppression of dissidents abroad, and the way it has squeezed Hong Kong and will likely squeeze Taiwan next. Europe will be even less inclined to lift a finger for Taiwan if we become more dependent on China.
Not to mention, China is helping Russia brutalize Ukraine.

Will they get to grab people off the street that get within a metre of the gate with this mega embassy too?

There seems to be a lot of
*They’re not trying to take over or influence things so no problem and ‘everyone spies anyway’*
History is littered with people someone thought was friends turning out to not be that great down the line. People helped into power turning out to not be great – if there’s one thing we can trust in geopolitics is noting will change from whatever is happening right this second, amirite
Let’s hope China stay our fwends forever and ever then and we all slide to work on a rainbow and they never leverage us or anything or put pressure on us for anything they want
Some people want to ‘disagree’ with the prevailing thought so much they’ll excuse anything

This government needs some serious investigation. They’re intentionally trying to destroy this country.

It’s a fair point that all major powers engage in espionage, so the new building itself isn’t the core issue. The real concern is the scale and what it enables, though you’re right that MI5 is surely preparing for it. Honestly, the unchecked influence from other allies sometimes feels like a more immediate, and accepted, problem.

They’re gonna have one anyway. They’re gonna soy regardless. At least we know where this is and how they will try to utilise it.
