China’s foreign ministry on Monday took aim at U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose sanctions on European countries that oppose his ambition to control Greenland.

“The international law underpinned by the purposes and principles of the United Nations charter is the foundation of the current international order and must be upheld,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Guo Jiakun told a news conference.

“We urge the U.S. to stop using the so-called China threat as a pretext for itself to seek selfish gains,” Guo added.

Trump has repeatedly said that the U.S. needs Greenland because China and Russia want the resource-rich arctic island for themselves. In an escalation of his rhetoric, Trump on Saturday said he would impose a 10% tariff on goods from eight European countries — Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands and Finland — until they agree to support to his talk of buying Greenland, a self-governing Danish island.

“World Peace is at stake!” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “China and Russia want Greenland, and there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it.” Last week, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told reporters in Washington that Trump’s assertions that the world’s largest island is “surrounded” by Russian and Chinese ships is factually inaccurate.

“It is not a true narrative that we have Chinese warships all around the place,” Lokke Rasmussen said. “According to our intelligence, we haven’t had a Chinese warship in Greenland for a decade or so.””

I can see China pivot towards EU. I’m just surprised Russia hasn’t made statements justifying US moves towards Greenland to hurt NATO further.

Idea: we actually give china a lease on greenland until the next US election. Thoughts? 🤔

EDIT: I have actually given it a bit more thought now and i have a theory. Considering that the US sees China as it’s number one threat, the Chinese opposition to this plan might be seen as confirmation that such an action threatens Chinese interest, and could result in Trump becoming even more driven to do it 🤔

That would be geopolitically smart as fuck. Russia too, given their statements about Greenland being Danish territory, could be looking towards egging Trump on to completely split the US and EU.

Now while i am not happy about the EU being used essentially as a chess piece by the superpowers of our age, the fact is that EU politics of the past 40-ish years have put us in precisely this position! We need to get our shit together and break with the US, not to benefit China or Russia or anything, but to benefit us.

I am sick and tired of EU officials sucking up to every US president, be it Trump, Biden or Obama. I am sick and tired of seeing things like Rutte’s leaked messages or him calling Trump daddy. I am sick and tired of Kallas forgetting her twitter password whenever the US violates international law, but suddenly remembering it when anyone else does anything.

For years we’ve all been told that China is going to take Taiwan. Now it looks like US is going to invade and steal a much bigger island. How many foreign military operations has the US done yet China is always presented as the bad guy. I don’t think any of them are good before I get accused of being a China whatever, the US has always been bad, this time it’s just Europe getting a taste of it.

China [calls](https://en.chinadiplomacy.org.cn/2026-01/20/content_118288912.shtml) on Europe to bolster its strategic autonomy. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the Americans not only *”insult European capabilities but also ignore the continent’s potential to act as a powerful, independent player on the world stage.”*

Crazy that we are in a world where China is actively pushing for European emergence due to the US and Russia buddying up.

And Canada is ahead of the curve on this. PM Carney just announced a major new strategic partnership with China. Perhaps Europe will follow soon. At the very least we’ll see a form of rapprochement. It points to a tripolar future.

*The current frictions over Greenland serve as a crucial inflection point for Europe. It is a clarion call for the continent to bolster its strategic autonomy, diversify its partnerships, and assert its role on the global stage. By doing so, Europe can ensure that its future is not dictated by the diktats of a bully, but is instead shaped by its collective interests.*

*The situation underscores the necessity for Europe to review the nature of transatlantic relations […] The notion that US interests inherently align with European stability has been challenged repeatedly, from trade disputes to differing stances on climate change and security.*

In other words America is bullying the whole world, I honestly think WW3 is such a stupid american narrative and to think anyone would fight for an imperialist pedo cult is laughable.

The only thing we are truly witnessing is rapid decline of US hegemony on all fronts while they use the last resort of their military to cling to power.

It is time for EU and China to lead the world as they seem to be the only adults left in the room, but if EU starts electing Trump’s puppets (Orban types), all over the place and into EU bodies, then we might as well become the 53rd US state and worship our pedos like gods, but at that point I’m so out.

China appearing in the stage in the role of the voice of reason is not what I had on my Bingo-card!

If China backed off from Taiwan, it would be the indisputable preferable partner for Europe.

China will go against Europe’s interest when it suits them, regrettable, but one can work with that.

America threatens Europe with war because its hate-filled electorate voted for a demented senior. Like seriously, the Americans can already effectively build bases and extract resources from Greenland as they please; this crisis started because Trump wants to conquer fresh soil, and America as a whole just follows his whim.

America can not be an international partner to anyone with a political system like its current one, and this will not go away with Trump.

The Chinese don’t have any designs on Europe. In contrast to Russia and the US who want to keep Europe down.

    Friendship with USA ended 🙅‍♂️

China is my new best friend 🤝

There are no Chinese warships in Greenland. That is just a Trump lie. The White House wants to loot Greenland’s critical minerals and deprive Europe of those minerals, but is afraid to say that openly.

  12. ThePipton on

While China is most certainly not Europe’s friend, they have consistently pushed for further EU integration and autonomy. Makes sense, as they don’t want the US to have such a big sphere of influence.

China becoming the reasonable voice on the world stage and slowly becoming a EU ally is weird af

China is absolutely continuing to do what’s best for China and making moves to be the only superpower in the world. They’ve committed horrible human rights violations and have performed military aggression against Taiwan and used shows of force to lay claim on international waters and expand their territory. They also run one of the largest hacking operations in the world, which frequently targets the west, Japan, and others.

All that to say, when China is the cover of treason, you know you’ve fucked up

A China-Europe alliance (obviously in a greater alliance including Canada, Japan, and other equal minded rational states) could probably end both the Ukraine war and Trumps threats against Europe.

China – a much more aligned country to Europe when it comes to science-oriented mindset, including global warming.

Obviously less into privacy and human rights, but then again, is the US? They broke international law by invading Iraq, they bulldozed over freshly recruited Iraqi soldiers and buried them alive, they had torture programs, they’ve paid for most of the Gaza genocide.

In short, it’s time to realize that we live in a world of imperialistic agents and start playing the field. Reaching out a hand to a country on the same continental plate as us is a good idea.

Not an hour goes by without me stopping and thinking something along the lines of “how can the Trump Administration be so f’ing stupid?”

They’re throwing a hissy fit over Canada letting Chinese cars in, but they’re also the idiots trying to drag the automobile industry away from Canada and Mexico. If Canada and Mexico don’t have an auto industry, why wouldn’t they allow in Chinese vehicles? What incentive would they have to buy more expensive American vehicles?

The United States has legitimate grievances with China. Europe has legetimate grievances with China. Instead of building support and leverage, however, the Administration is practically forcing Europe to move closer to China.

There is no NATO if the United States takes Greenland. The biggest direct threat for Europe now is the USA, not Russia, not China. When you threaten to take over territory, that’s the inevitable outcome.

  18. SufficientLibrary386 on

Guys, this is not “China suddenly being a good guy”, this is “China strategizing the hell out of this situation”.

EU & US fighting is good for China. Befriending Canada & EU for trade purposes is good for China. China knows befriending Trump is never going to work for them.

  19. jmomentum on

Everyone is dependent on China now whether we like it or not. Americans are just too stupid to realize this reality. I’m sure it will work out well for them since they have absolutely no leverage other than their military. They are just a carbon copy of Russia now. Decimating their economy for pointless wars and agression.

  20. This-Difficulty762 on

At this point, fuck America. Realign are partners and isolate the states.
This all just getting a bit insane and the blackmail can fuck off.

Any chance of China stopping the funding of the inviasion of eastern europe through their no limits partnership with Russia?

  22. Protton6 on

China being the adult in the world is something I have not imagined would happen. They are a horrible regime, totalitarian and oppressive, but at least you can talk to them. They want something? They are willing to make deals that will benefit them, but also others.

Fuck Trump. Making me prefer China… what the fuck.

  23. SvanteArrheniusAMA on

By now I’m fully in the camp that says we should normalize relations with China. The Chinese have never threatened European territory and the only only reason we have a hostile posture towards them is because they committed the unforgivable sin of developing an economy that is as big as that of the US. Helping the US contain China is harmful to our own interest at this point. Basically, we should go the same way as the Canadian PM and drop all anti-Chinese economic measures that were only taken because of loyalty to Washington (those that are beneficial for us should obviously stay).

  24. RockyRocc on

I bet next thing Trump will cry about is EU aligning more with China and call it a treason

  25. StrongCelery on

It is becoming increasingly clear that China are far more allied to Europe than Trump. They are quite right here and looking at their trade figures it is clear the US has become the emperor with no clothes. Let’s go full Macron on them.
