On the one hand – it shows that even amongst the country’s highest judges there’s always miscommunication about what the courts can and cannot do, especially in rare cases like this where a minor is sentenced to murder.

But on the other hand – I’ve not seen anything reported that Boy B has been particularly remorseful or ready for release to the general public. If he only served 8 years, then it might be the smallest murder sentence ever served in this jurisdiction. The crime was appalling and still shocks people to this day.

The entire appeal seems to rest on “he said he’d get a review which it turns out he can’t have”, but in reality the penalty for murder is life and the fact that his sentence is as short as it is shows that every possibly mitigating factor was taken into account. It’s a nothing appeal. Enjoy your next 7+ years in prison lad. It probably won’t be the last.

I would argue that Ana’s murder was one of the most heinous acts of sexual violence we’ve ever seen in this country, given how it was all planed and the age of the victim/murderers.

The story of the bullying and subsequent murder of Ana should be a programme across every secondary school.

If I were running the country I’d have them named once they hit 18, make an example of them so that no young person has to go through what Ana went through.

They should never be released as they will continue to be a serious threat to women in society.

We really can’t be surprised at sentencing anymore. Larry Murphy is a serial killer and was released after 10 years. For other scumbags it tends to take north of 50 previous convictions to see an anyway decent jail stint.

This country half arses pretty much every governmental area (housing, healthcare, justice, education). If we have no power to review sentences like this then the bare minimum this girl deserves is an effort to make sure that is changed for any future similar cases.

  6. Legislation should be introduced or current laws changed so they they can be name once they reach 18.

I suspect their names are widely known in the Lucan/leixlip area.

    Remember the Jamie Bulger case?

Turns out the one they suspected was led by the other boy, was actually the psychopathic ringleader. He was just smarter how he presented himself and blamed it on the other boy.

After they got out, the so-called “ringleader” never had another problem, whereas the supposedly “impressionable follower”, Venables, has been in and out of prison for all sorts.
