That’s a really bad headline.
The thug of the headline who battered a man is the same man who was attacking the woman.
It’s not saying a thug interrupted an attack on a woman and battered the person who was attacking a woman.
To me, their headline infers that a “known local thug” found a woman being assaulted and (counter to type) saved her by battering the assaulter.

Out in 3 years is not good enough for scum like this, fair play to the guy who interrupted him and got battered for his trouble he could well have saved the woman’s life.
