History books: “and then the USA sided with Russia and other dictatorships around the world, actively antagonizing and warmongering democracies”

That’s a good thing. It’s very concerning that it took Trump and events like these for European leaders to come to this conclusion.
It sounds like we were happy to basically be vassal states of the US and openly supported as well as encouraged US imperialism as long as it benefited us economically.
I fear that most are just hoping that it returns back to “normal” after Trump is gone and we can go back to bootlicking in return for the previous “benefits”.

Finally its said.
The US national security calls for “cultivating resistance to Europe’s current trajectory” which taken together with the entire administrations actions like befriending Euro-sceptic, pro-Putin, closeted facists and leaving the 66 international organizations, means “destroy the EU”.
The future is without the US and EU needs to act fast.

Sad for Europe now that the US has decided to stop the grift. Whether you love or loathe the US, it’s pretty rational to ask how the Yanks could be so slow that it took decades before they realized they were being ridden hard & put away wet day after day by Europe.

I tried for a good chunk of yesterday to get it through some Americans’ thick skulls on here that no amount of declarative helplessness on their part can undo what they have done in short time now. Whether they deserve it or not, we’re well within our rights to stop trying to salvage this.

I read something that made sense to me. The US and Europe are not actually natural allies. The only times we come together is when one of us is in grave danger. When there isn’t that grave danger, our interests rarely align.
During WW2, Roosevelt was more suspicious of Britain than he was of the soviets.
Even now, you can see it in the way Europeans talk about Americans on their continent, There is deep rooted suspicion and claims that the US only does anything out of self interest. Even when Europeans talk about Americas help in ww2 there are always caveats about how we only joined when the war was already over and that our troop contribution was bad, etc.
I think the feeling is mutual. You could see it from when Obama got caught spying on the Germans. The Americans don’t trust the Europeans either.
This goes way beyond Trump. Trump is just so loud and obnoxious that you can’t ignore it.
Even if NATO is somehow saved during the Trump admin, I think the overall undertones are correct. The transatlantic alliance has outlived it’s usefulness, and Europe and the US have far different interests now that can’t be reconciled.
The US could care less about Russia’s imperial ambitions in the east as it is no real threat to us what so ever. Yet that is basically all Europe cares about. The US cares deeply about China, but Europe needs China to survive economically.
I actually think what is likely to happen in the future is the US will drop its European alliance, and try to form a new alliance with Russia.
A Russian and Chinese alliance is stronger than anything on the planet, the US cannot let it happen under any circumstances. Even if that means we need to offer Russia an alliance just to keep them from the Chinese.
US foreign policy had to change. We cannot be everywhere at all times. We went broke trying to be that and it allowed the most dangerous enemy we’ve ever faced to rise unimpeded while we were distracted. We now need to focus on our core interests and any distractions need to be cut out.
It isn’t just that the US President is not on our side; the old rules-based order built around global institutions has been broken beyond repair. The rules were never applied evenly in the first place, and we knew it, but we tolerated it and continued the fiction in the name of peace and stability.
It feels like a few years ago if someone would have said those things, it would be some dude giving his radical, fringe manifesto on Reddit. But what is fascinating about the last few weeks is that we are seeing the leaders of countries like Canada and France saying that that is, in fact, the context in which we should view the last 70 years and it is the current state of the world.
solvedproblem on
I understand it’s not easy to have an alliance like we’ve had for nearly 80 years end this way, so I get why we’re not jumping to scream it’s all over and the us can never be trusted.
But by this point we have to accept that at least for a good while, the us is not our friend at all.
BergderZwerg on
I mean, to be fair the orange blob is just too stupid to pull the wool over our eyes or charm our attention away from their actions. They have been imperialistic for decades (at least since Reagan) and destabilised, overthrown or inspired coups d’état all over the world (etc. Iran, Panama).
Then they spread their spyware all over the place and we were complacent/ stupid enough to buy both their software and devices. Them going after China for the same thing is just the pot calling the kettle black.
We now know we can’t rely on them for anything, but probably never could. When ruzzia started its invasion of Ukraine in 2014, their vaunted “security guarantees” were supposed to have been triggered and they were called upon to kick the orcs out then, but Obama and the rest of those (censored) did nothing. Their bluff had been called.
Waiting for those (censored) is not worth it, we should kick the orcs out of Ukraine ourselves. Otherwise we could soon have a two front war on our hands. Punching putain now as hard as possible means he has to lick his wounds, ideally gets defenestrated and we can concentrate on repelling the kingdom of raving idiots.

us vice president, the republican government and politicians and their voter base are not exactly friends either. doubtful their next president will be any different, regarding if they’re gonna be a democrat or republican.
us policy has always been that of economic and military bullying smaller countries. they don’t want to share the world economic pie in 3 (us, eu, china) hence their concerted push to break eu. add to this an european federation with its army in the top 3 in the world and you’ll get why they act aggressively against Europe.

This is the outcome of Europe not listening to the American president telling us:
> Free riders aggravate me, and
> You have to pay your fair share.
> The defense of the liberal international order against jihadist terror, Russian adventurism, and Chinese bullying depends in part, he believes, on the willingness of other nations to share the burden with the U.S.
Ten years after refusing to contribute to the defense of the liberal international order, the free riders complain it has collapsed.
Don’t blame Trump for this, our own politicians had no interest in defending the old world order either.

Europeans need to understand that right wing Americans do not like its current iteration. They want the Europe of 1896 back, which was imperialist, authoritarian, white, Christian and illiberal. Many right wing Americans view Europe as a weak, dying civilization, overrun by Africans and Muslims.
