Europe has a reputation of saying this and never following through.
Like a teenager threatening to run away from home, for real this time. He’s really just waiting for the parents to make the decision to finally kick him out, at which point he’ll pretend it was all *his* idea and on *his* terms.

Same vibe, same level of discussion.
Move on.

It is so infuriating that everyone thinks that NATO can’t survive without the US. The US troops are only 37% of NATO and they pay only 16% of its admin.
What the US does do is spend the most on NATIONAL SECURITY and the clue is in the name. The rest of NATO does exactly the same so the US doesn’t subsidise ANY country.

The realistic general assumption now is probably that while the US is under Trump or whatever next MAGA figure succeeds him, if there’s a conflict with Russia, the US will *NOT* help — because as Trump said in the January 2026 chapter of the Greenland saga, the US will only find reason to fight for places they *own*.
US forces stationed in Europe and/or taking part in exercises are nice to see but, while under Trump/MAGA, it will likely end up as just a waste of time for everybody and only fake PR. They’re probably nice military professionals but Trump/MAGA will make sure they’re not there to help.
As the situation of Ukraine while Trump’s in power has shown, any “assistance” will likely be in the form of sales of US weapons, and could be worse for Europe if they’ll be at war-profiteering mark-ups.

NATO can survive without the USA. What’s important is that it secures the continued membership of Turkey in the event of the US leaving / being removed.
That being said, I suspect US arms manufacturers to have something to say about the US walking away from NATO completely.

NATO is not dead, it is reconfiguring.

He is right that it is fracturing but completely wrong to think Europe can have a few years to bridge the gap.
It needs to bridge the manufacturing gap especially for artillery, mortars and for air defenses *this year* and focus fully on supporting Ukraine, which takes care of Europes main military threat in the short term.
There is a current a live war that it is vital for Europe to win.
A loss of Ukraine due to loss of power and heat and its absorption into Russia would greatly strengthen Russia. Its not just doing the right thing, its vital for Europe.
