Because banning them would mean Europeans have to use… European apps. And we all know how much we love our own tech products.
I increasingly think that this is not something you can leave up to the free market. The governments should be the customer 1, and mandate EU cloud alternatives for government agencies and critical infrastructure. Domestic cloud systems will then be mature enough to take up market share from the US giants, a process that can be further accelerated by tax incentives etc.
The most important thing is to break the cultural barrier: Large organizations in particular go with US giants, because “no one gets fired for buying microsoft” adage is true and the marketing teams of US giants are great at navigating the complex and bureaucratic software procurement processes. Large organizations could probably manage all their work with European alternatives, if they were a bit more tech-savvy and ready to combine a few solutions instead of creating monstrous feature lists.
We can’t for the moment but we need to. But once we do, oh boy, the US will finally understand that angering us was a bad idea. We don’t lack the money or technology to replace Google, Amazon, Palantir and the rest, we just lack vision and leadership. First the slumbering people in Brussels need to wake up and decide that enough is enough, then everything will fall into place.
Not only a problem for the EU
This is just the perception and fear, it is absolutelly possible to switch away. If someone claims otherwise they have to share what exactly they miss.
We literally can, create alternatives, make them more attractive or/and make them easier to access than their counterparts. And advertise it loads.
It will take time but it’s doable.
Of all the tech products I use personally, replacing Microsoft has been very easy (e.g. Ubuntu, Nextcloud, Mistral AI, Ecosia browser and search etc.). Not using Amazon or Netflix is no challenge either.
The harder challenge is replacing Apple devices. That’s my next tech replacement project but I am taking small, steady steps so I don’t overwhelm myself.
Overall it explains the reasons. Much of government in europe has been pushing for digitalization and cloud in areas where the american tech sector has had a lead, and becuase the European alternatives has not had an advantage by being european that lead has only grown.
The best time to have developed european cloud infrastructure was 20 years ago, the second best time is today.
There is one huge problem. And it applies to whole of humanity. We are in general lazy. When an app has managed to develop huge user base, it’s not that easy to switch to an app without it.
European solutions would have to be miles ahead technologically and cheaper at the same time to have a shot.
first of all, we most certainly can. There is nothing ‘magical’ about US IT. Quite a lot of it open source and almost all of it run by ‘first generation Americans’. Brain drain in US is a thing now under current ‘administration’. EU has amazing opportunity to create multiple ‘silicon valleys’.
It would not happen overnight, but it will happen. What could happen much quicker is passing laws which would make US companies play by EU rules when operating in EU. Yes, Trump will threat us wirh 1 million % tariffs … but fuck Trump.
