Why does it not mention the five million cost to rerun the mayoralship that he hasn’t finished his term of or the fact he lost that last leadership election? Far better Burnham is used for the next general election to fight off reform

Understandable that there are some fears that seat may be lost to reform but you have to face two difficult situations

  2. Out of power for 12-odd years, back in for barely two and already imploding.

Why is the left wing in this country so pitiful. Who are we supposed to vote for?!

Can we go 1 week without a Labour own goal pleaseeee.

Have no animosity towards Starmer but this feels like self preservation as he undoubtedly would’ve been a leader in waiting.

  4. LegitimateCompote377 on

Wow, Starmer must be really vulnerable now. If they lose the seat to Reform or the Greens it will really show their weakness, but I still feel he will hold until the Welsh and Scottish elections, then he will probably feel like there will be no other choice but to resign. This was a bad mistake aimed at self preservation (including keeping the mayorship of Manchester) that will bite Starmer in the back.

Let the labour members astroturfing of this post commence!

There is only a Labour civil war in the Daily Express news room.

Those of us who were in the left of the Labour Party around 2019-2024 know full well the conniving Machiavellian freaks who dominate the party machinery. They have no morals.

I wouldn’t mind so much if they actually used their dishonourable talents to occasionally achieve something good but their entire existence seems to revolve around ensuring they face no accountability from the Left so they can drag the party even further to the right in the hope of personal gain (peerage, board positions etc).

And before anyone says they do it to win elections, how do you think the next GE is going to play out for Labour?

  8. JACKDAGROOVE on

As was always going to happen, given Starmer and his masters are such despicable weak cowards. This will only strengthen resolve to get rid of the parasites.

Labour and going a week without shooting themselves in the foot

    Oh grow up, Labour Party.

The world and UK has bigger problems to face than your egos and infighting.

You’re going to lose the next election with this.

Jesus. This is where we are now – the country’s hopes are pinned on this spectacular, gladiatorial contest between *Kier Starmer* and *Andy Burnam*.

Burnham is soft left. This is how ideologically committed the Labour leadership are to keeping any and all, even remotely left wing threat to Starmer, out of the party

They will quite literally hand this country over to Farage before conceding on any of their own right wing bullshit

  13. boringfantasy on

Fuck sake. Starmer is clinging onto power in desperation and will bring the country down with him by opening the door for Farage.

Pure opportunism only 1.5 years into the term. I’m glad he’s been blocked. Whatever happens next happens, but I don’t approve of Burnham riding in with no justification thinking he can just slot in as PM.

Ditching your leader once they’re PM because you’re scared of polls after 1.5 years is absolutely pathetic, destabilising behaviour btw.

If Labour lose the seat now, it will intensify challenges to Starmer. Now the attacks will be “Burnham could’ve won that.”

The best case scenario for Starmer would’ve been to let Burnham stand and lose the by-election. That would’ve killed off his leadership challenge entirely.

  16. Rude_Sheepherder_714 on

The ‘true left’ really don’t deserve to be in power.

What a shambles, and Burnham should be ashamed.

  17. iamezekiel1_14 on

Bring on the Nigel. Let’s be brutally honest, that’s the only outcome anybody wanted from this right, so they can taste the true poverty and deprivation that they voted for from a Richard Tice Emergency Budget or am I being uncharitable?

  18. Reverend_Vader on

I wonder if that panel realised their decision damaged starmer

More than putting him through ever would

Well doesn’t this just scream “strength” from the Labour party. A man who voted for the Iraq war and against investigations into it, who voted against increased regulation on gambling companies and for ID cards / mass surveillance is now too left wing for Keir Starmer’s party. They’ll be lucky to have 100 MPs left after the next election… because of shit like this.

  20. Impressive-Bird-6085 on

When will Labour’s leadership ever learn??

This is an open goal for Reform UK and the Conservatives….

If Labour carries on like this, with more of these underhand shenanigans and cleaving more to the right, then I’ll be well and truly done with voting Labour. Ever again!

Labour cancelling local elections is a terrible look. When democracy is shelved, even temporarily, peaceful protest should be the default response. The reasons feel too obvious lately and too many senior figures at risk of losing their seats/power

I see kier starmer as an increasingly authoritarian leader. He tolerates little internal opposition, centralises control, and now we’re seeing democratic processes quietly shelved when they become inconvenient. That should worry people, regardless of party.

Save rebrand for later = more actual sensible government tbh
