I’m not so worried about robotaxis being unsafe. My concern is that AI is going to nuke the gig economy and entire industries from orbit.
What matters is that autonomous vehicles are safer and cheaper than actual human labour, and that’s a pretty low bar.
Are we ready for the millions of lorry drivers, cabbies, deliverymen and couriers that could end up losing their jobs to AI?

These would be a game-changer in rural areas far more than cities. Being able to access a 24/7 taxi service in an area with few buses and distances too far to walk would be a massive quality of life boost.
I suspect it would take a while to train a model that works on rural roads though.

I love that there are things the electorate is allowed to have a view on and things we are not. Why are we never asked about things like this? About Chinese EVs flooding the market? Either we have Switzerland-style referendums or we’re just sheep letting a government 20% of people voted for do whatever they wake up and think of.

Good. Trying to get an Uber or a taxi late at night/early in the morning for an airport run is a nightmare at the moment.

Robotaxis are all very well and good, but in many towns you have people parking on the street, how will the taxi handle giving way to oncoming traffic? How will it handle narrow country lanes?

Promising British chip designer EnSilica (London: ENSI) has sold over ten million chips for JaguarLandRover cars so I hope to see their staff and shareholders benefit from Waymo’s increased use of Jaguar cars.
EnSilica are also developing a chip for autonomous vehicles so hopefully that will reap rewards in time too. r/EnSilica. I am a proud British shareholder.
