I’ve had concerned Americans asking me about crime rates here. I tell them this.

One of the side effects of social media and a generally more connected world is that sensationalist stories spread more easily, and people react to fear inducing stores far more than positive ones, it’s a basic survival trait.

So when a robbery occurs in, say Luton, that 30 years ago would have only been mentioned in the crime section of the local newspaper, now it becomes a story on facebook and can be read by (and indeed pushed to) anyone.

So you end up with old ladies in sleepy villages being petrified by reports of crimes in the inner cites hundreds of miles from them.

Never mind that actual crime and violence may be historically low, the ability to push stories about it is extremely high and that gives people an extremely distorted view of reality.

“It’s only fallen because it doesn’t include all the murders in the half of the country that are no-go areas” – GBeebies probably

So looking at the graph, what happened around 2002 that there was a spike followed by a ski slope?

All the cash men used to spend down the pub has gone into building extensions that transform the kitchen into the biggest room in the house, where we eat takeaway food on £2000 kitchen islands

Nobody’s in danger of getting stabbed, unless the Just Eat driver gets lippy

Remember, you don’t need to catch the murderer to record a homicide. So don’t start talking about how it’s because the police aren’t catching them.

The only crime the Police actually works hard on.

      Surprise it went down..

    11. Murders down but sexual assaults are up.
It seems the people who are doing the sexual assaults have stopped killing their victims as they know they won’t be punished.
