  1. The national government also sent the police to the HQ of the party that runs the city. Supposedly a bomb threat.

Ok, if anyone actually gives a fuck about bullshit in Croatia, here’s an actual breakdown:

Croatian Handball team won the Bronze medal at the world championship. As is tradition in Croatia, this pretty much makes them the national heroes for a week or two. This also traditionally means a big party is thrown at the main square in the capital city of Zagreb.

The players requested that the controversial musician Thompson perform at the gathering. Thompson’s music is very nationalistic in its themes, and at times he touches on a shameful fascist period of Croatian history. Not all of his fans are fascists, but pretty much all croatian fascists are his fans.

The mayor and city authorities (which are very left leaning) have refused to allow Thompson to sing.

In response, the Handball team canceled the welcome home party.

In response to that, the Prime Minister came out and said the welcoming party will be held in the capital, despite the mayor saying no, and that Thompson will sing. This is unconstitutional and outright illegal.

Currently, the situation is developing, with threats being leveled at the mayor of Zagreb and his party, as well as a police raid of their party headquarters.

It’s not good, is what I’m saying.

Changing the subject a little but the Croatian players were super disrespectful to the queen of Denmark. She was handing out the medals and half of them just ignored her and wouldn’t shake her hand. Not cool Croatia.

As a Croatian I am most ashamed that all of this is over a bronze medal in a sport as insignificant as handball!! Ffs a bronze medal!

We used to have standards and great athletes now we celebrate a bronze in handball.
Once a great sporting nation truly decaying now.
Theres practically nothing left in Croatian sports.
Once Modric retires RIP Croatian sports.

Thompson, as in “Bojna Čavoglave” Thompson? I didn’t even knew the guy was still alive, nor still having a career and fans. Big yikes by the government of Croatia.

This is why Croatia and eastern Europe cannot be allowed in the EU

  7. Meh, tell us something new. The glorification of war crimes and associated criminals is nothing new in the Balkans. Baja, Thompson, etc are still very popular in their respective nationalities and no one really cares

Everyone is a fascist now. Like wtf is going on in this world?

The left-wing option is predominant here, and everyone who is not left-wing is a fascist, a Nazi…

These countries really love authoritarianism for some reason. Guess they miss Yugoslavia.

As a Croat living in Zagreb, I can’t believe the shit that is going on in the last couple of months. I really feel very ashamed and bit scared for our future.

  13. So prime minister Plenkovic is solely responsible for this. It’s his decision.

I hope this will be the end of his ambitions for a high European office.

Remember this and write to EU officials when he tries to grab a function.

News like this just make me want to move out of Croatia as soon as i get my degree. Inflation all around, we can’t afford homes, salaries are low and the most important talked about thing is a fucking neo-nazi not being able to sing in our capital. Absolute disgrace of a country

I grew up in Croatia, I played handball when I was young and I followed Croatian national handball team since their first championship in 1994. Over the course of 30+ years Croatia had exquisite players and it was such a joy to watch them play (it was also a wrecking ball for the nerves)

I moved from Croatia long time ago because I was always annoyed with the politics and extreme right wingers pushing their narratives, but I was always so happy and so proud of successes in sports.

Well, now it ends. Politics and extremism managed to tarnish everything I enjoyed and I could relate myself with. It’s so sad. The pride I once felt over our national handball team has turned into a shame.

To the Danes on this topic, I’m sorry for the rude behaviour towards your Queen. Please know we’re not all like that.

  16. Situational update:

    * The city hall and administration was evacuated due to a fake bomb threat
    * The police are preventing the municipal guards from approaching the main square and doing their work

  17. Don’t be fooled by these texts. Last time a far right party had a seat in the croatian parliament was back in 1998.

Just in case somebody tries explaining how the guy doesn’t have anything to do with Fascism or Neo-Nacism, please just Google him.
Among many other shit, the guy had a song glorifying the WW2 Ustasha death camps (“Jasenovac i Gradiska stara”) and the people leading them (praising the butchers of Max Luburic). Imagine if somebody glorified Aushwitz and the Nazis…. And he hasn’t changed, at his last concert, for which, btw >10% of the entire country’s population showed up, he came dressed in the prison uniform of a terrorist who killed people and spent 32 years in US prison.
This is a complete fucking joke, we are in year 2026 and the largest ticketed concert in history (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most-attended_concerts) is from a fucking Nazi…
