I know there were two assaults but two years seems fairly excessive for a heat of the moment thing with seemingly no long term impact.

But maybe the fact Guards are meant to be held to a higher standard played a role.

“She said the teenager did not have a good record but this was not known to Garda Murphy at the time and none of it justified the level of force he used.

She said he had used unnecessary force against a light, intoxicated youth who was powerless while lying face down in handcuffs.”

Where do gardai who get jail time go? Is there a special unit for them somewhere?

    >The matter was referred by a Superintendent to the Garda Ombudsman now known as Fiosrú, after another garda said he was concerned there may have been an assault and the teenager had suffered a head injury.

Fair play to the other garda. I hope there are many other Gardaí reporting their colleagues for overstepping their boundaries.

  5. > The trial heard the garda had “spear tackled” and used a “leg sweep” to bring the teenager to the ground after arresting him while trying to clear crowds who were drinking on a Dublin city centre street during Covid restrictions in 2021.

    Cunt.

Bully boy with orders from above to clear out the rabble for the crime of being outside during a completely ridiculous lockdown.

Too harsh harsh, a wake up call was def needed for this guard

We have much better police than most in the world by far and keeping them held to account is important in this. Look at France and America,  their police are shocking.

Saying that, dealing with teenagers and intoxicated people everyday , i can see someone cracking and flicking a switch. This case it was a 2 in one, if i remember well, the kid refused to drop a bottle and it was crowd of them vs 2 guards. Saying that, the guard, at the station,  he should of def calmed down. I’d rather he got suspended for a year and have to go through anger management training if he wants the job after a year, but not a guarantee.

After all, You are a cliff weathering a storm every day with these types of jobs, plus these teenagers, wankers on coke .. etc are getting worse. Expecting people not to crack is naive as a society, but neither is tolerating it when it happens.

Maybe there’s more I’m missing tho

    >She accepted that Murphy was extremely remorseful and that he had destroyed his promising career as a result of his aggressive actions which were reckless rather than intentional on the day.

    >She accepted that many testimonials had been handed in on his behalf both professionally and personally and he was described as a dependable and decent person. However she said the clearest expression of remorse would have been a guilty plea.

    and

    >Murphy had been suspended since the matter was referred to Fiosrú.

    >During that time he studied for a law degree, the court was told.

Seems like the sentence was appropriate, what he did was nasty. After he’s released, he likely won’t be allowed to practice law with this conviction, surely he should have known that before spending all that time studying.

I know a couple of very decent people that have joined the gardai but most interactions I have had with gardai in general have been negative. Never been arrested but any time Ive needed the gardai they either failed to show up or were just completely dismissive of the situation.

Strange that there’s no footage of the Garda going in or out of Court, as there would normally be for any other criminal. Even the Gardai on trial for fixing speeding offences were widely pictured in the media.
