Good, needs to be enforced.
Was driving home last week around 9PM, complete darkness.
First e-scooter I see on a roundabout, no lights, no reflective gear, all black and dark grey clothing and a face covering.
Second at the top of a hill, in my lane but going opposite direction, same attire as the first but at least the e-scooter had a light.

Is it also illegal to have 2 people on one?

“No timeline for the introduction of the regulations is yet in place”
Sooo… Nothing to worry about just yet then?
And even if they do manage to introduce it this decade with the virtually complete lack of any kind of road enforcement it’ll be little more than pointless lip service.
Yet again

All praise the RSA and their real gods the illuminati and a ban on non road legal moterbikes. FFG really slapping on the rules here.
This will surely solve everything, more rules that won’t be enforced??
Prioritize safe infrastructure? No, no let’s just make high vis mandatory never mind about lights or giving guards more powers.

The absolute bare minimum that should have been in place for a while.

Aside from what the rules are, I do not understand people wanting to be on busy roads on any form of transport with no lights, regardless if it’s a pedal bike or a truck. I cycle and drive and am always checking that my lights are on and working before driving in the morning/evening. Pretty much every teenager in my town cycles in all black/grey clothing with no lights. I’m constantly having to jam on my brakes in the morning when they seemingly appear out of nowhere.

Are they going to roll this out to actual push bikes?

We’re policing dress code now.
Should the Guards be checking to make sure people are dressed warm enough that they don’t get sick? What about making sure people are covered up enough in summer that they don’t get burned?
If a cyclist goes out in high viz and gets warm, they can’t take off their jacket?
Stupid rule.

Ah sure they are mad for their rules. They’ll do fuck all about enforcing the rules though and the scum will use it as another conviction with pride anyway.

And enforced like all those other road traffic regulations.

I think it makes sense for scooters to wear hi vis as their rear light is so low down if they have one at all. Bikes on the other hand should already have an acceptably noticeable light at the rear. Enforcement of the current rules should be enough

If (big if) this was actually enforced on normal bikes it would completely kill the rental bike systems like Dublin bikes, bolt bikes, etc.
Which would do even more damage to our environmental reputation.
No mention from our minister for the environment on this or how maybe we should fast track better cycling infrastructure, no? Let’s keep everyone sharing the same space but give them a helmet, that will solve everything.

There is a 1500 euro fine for dog fouling in my local park. Another fine for people smoking the the playground. Zero enforcement of both.

This is so fucking stupid and flies in the face of all evidence. The danger is posed by cars, not bikes. But this is easier than actually separating car and bike traffic so they’ll fire ahead with it, and in the end all it will mean is less people walking and cycling.

Unfortunate for that poor girl that we have a reactive government. They could have been proactive on this years ago and possibly might have saved a life.
There’s obviously many who won’t abide by the law, same people probably don’t abide by many laws but the heavy hand is the only way to enforce this.

More laws, no proactive measures around lanes, drivers or the mad counterflow systems that swap sides of the road halfway along busy roads.
As a driver and cyclist, cyclists do what they do because drivers never follow the rules anyway, always put you in danger and generally couldn’t give a shit about cyclist safety.
Both parties are flawed, but a driver in his car too wide for Irish roads is slightly better off than me on my exposed push bike so I have no sympathy for shite,. impatient drivers

I’m pretty sure this isn’t the case in any nearby countries, as it discourages usage of a more efficient and sustainable form of transport – having another barrier to using e-bikes/e-scooters is a win for the car manufacturer lobby.
Other countries focus on improving safety through public investment in active travel infrastructure – which helps to improve safety for everyone *and* also reduces traffic and increases sustainable transport.

Hi vis and lights don’t work unfortunately. I wear both. A very luminous yellow vest and flashing white light. But the lady who almost killed me in her jeep last night said she couldn’t see me 🤷♂️

About time. I cycle myself but i always make sure i have lights & helmet as well as a helmet. Ppl can mock & say helmets don’t save lives but as someone who had a cycling injury last year & if i wasn’t wearing a helmet i would have had a head injury as well as torn ligaments.

That’s only protecting the rider, its not protecting the pedestrians or other road users they are endangering..

An absolute joke that has no backing in evidence and instead is based on vibes after years of high viz propaganda and victim blaming from the RSA. Absolute regressive move from a regressive government that will set back sustainable transport efforts by years.
Chickened out of implementing the 30km/h urban speed limit for cars but lets make it harder for people to use alternative methods. We are not a serious country.
